There is a popular legend associated with the Heart of Midlothian Mosaic that says if you spit on the heart, it will bring you good luck and ensure that you will return to Edinburgh in the future. This tradition dates back to the time when the Old Tolbooth prison stood on the site of the heart. It is said that people would spit on the heart as a symbol of disgust for the prison and the harsh conditions that prisoners had to endure. Over time, the act of spitting on the heart evolved into a good luck ritual that was believed to guarantee a person's return to Edinburgh. While the tradition of spitting on the heart may seem a bit unhygienic or unpleasant to some, it is a popular practice among visitors to the city and is regarded as a fun and lighthearted way to engage with Edinburgh's history and culture. The Heart of Midlothian Mosaic continues to be an iconic symbol of the city and a must-see attraction for anyone visiting Edinburgh. While this was Mr. Fluffy’s first time in Edinburgh… Mr. Chill has spat on the heart every time and he has been three times. So, maybe the legend it’s true. Go ahead and spit your heart out
The Midlothian Heart! Originally the entrance to the Old Tollbooth which was demolished in the 1800s. Legend has it that it's good luck to spit in the centre. Do you need to spit while walking, or can you do it from a standstill? I don't know. I'm rarely successful either way, it must be a real Scottish skill! A must-see on the Royal Mile.
Walking down The Royal Mile there’s a heart in the street rumor has it if you spit on it you will have good luck. You guessed it we spit.. Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Historic spot with a great story behind it, in Edinburgh, just outside the St. Giles Cathedral.
My reason for this is to show the Edinburgh Fringe images and how Edinburgh looks when its on. Its a wacky world in town the place so busy and full of artists from all over the world. Its well worth a visit even just to see all acts and events that going on in town.
a guy in front of me spat on it and I was extremely shocked turns out its a local custom anyway, nobody else seemed to be interested at this wonderful piece in front of me.can be easily seen near St Giles Cathedral
Edinburgh is full of fantastic things like this that are easy to miss if you arent paying attention. This is a beautiful mosaic that marks the old tolbooth that was once on this spot. It is worth reading the book The Heart of Midlothian by Walter Scott to learn more about it. Do beware when admiring this that it is local tradition to spit on the mosaic for luck!
Heart-shaped mosaic built into the pavement of Royal Mile, marking the position of the Old Tolbooth. It’s a local custom to spit on the heart for luck which always brings a shocked look from the crowd of visitors nearby
Scotland is filled with little eccentricities and this heart is one of them. You are not supposed to step on it and you should spit inside the heart for good luck in general and to have the good luck to return to Edinburgh. I loved the city so of course I spat on it every time I was walking by. Fingers crossed for the legend to be true.
Looked like it could do with a good clean today. It's not just for the tourists, so come on Edinburgh council sort it out.
