I like old pubs, but this is something different. It’s tun by the same family for generations, so if you are into history, you will love this place. Food is locally sourced and delicious albeit simple, same goes for beers and ciders. Highly worth a detour off the beaten track.
Perfect country pub for good weather - since the interior is quite compact but the gardens are extensive. As well as serving local ales and cider the pub also has a menu of excellent and largely home made food. Very friendly and helpful staff. I almost feel like not recommending this as it’s the sort of place you don’t want to become TOO popular. During our visit we were joined by a very friendly robin after some free food. Lovely.
I love this place. It's tiny but it's a genuine olde English pub that's been in the same family for 90 years! I love the fact that they've got tiny menu because the food they serve is excellent. Arriving at 12:30 on a busy Thursday lunchtime, I was disappointed to find that I'd missed the last portion of quiche but subsequently delighted to find that my second choice, the cheese and pickle sandwich was so impressive that I had to insist that my three companions tried it! For the record, they were all impressed, too and, between them, insisted I try the ham and beef from their ploughman's lunches. They aren't open all day, every day, and they only take cash, but they're good people, so I can't begrudge them for that. Outside, they sell flowers and vegetables to raise thousands of pounds for charity!
Nice little pub very familiar feel, staff were lovely, we were given blankets and hot water bottles! Small but well done menu everything we had was delicious, and I definitely recommend a visit. If you want so sit inside I recommend you book a while I. Advance as there is limited space
Quirky authentic English pub. Two entrances, one to the bar and one to the other bar! , Open between 12 and 3pm. Real fire makes it welcoming on a cold day, squish together on the benches and get to know the locals. Owners very welcoming, we sat next to their family members and had a lovely chat, been in the same family for 90 years or so. It was the chaps 80th birthday. Dogs welcome. Homemade meals on the menu, we had rare beef sandwiches that were very plentiful, along with locally made wine surprisingly good and beer from kegs again, very good. CAMRA. The pub is filled with memorabilia, outside you could purchase plants for charity, you could even purchase old pennies! There are lots of nooks and crannies outside where you can huddle in your groups and enjoy the gardens. Need to take cash as no cards taken, plus the toilets are in the building over the lane from the pub! Thankfully, the toilets have loo roll rather than authentic cut up newspaper! Highly recommended, a very hidden gem that takes you back in time.
A brilliant traditional English pub. Had a delicious ploughmans. Very quirky with a beautiful garden. Would totally recommend.
My favorite pub in all of England. Excellent food- just like your grandmother or mom might make. It feels like stepping back in time and homey like the way a pair of cosy old slippers feels. Would recommend it as a walk from nearby local towns. This is the best kept secret of the South Downs.
Perfectly fabulous traditional pub serving delicious food, and beers straight from the barrel - unbeatable! The pea and ham soup gets such good reviews because it really is that good. The cottage pie is also bound to please, but as I found out having them both puts a strain on the waistband… The car park is fairly small and it’s essential to book a table at peak times as the pub is very popular. Definitely worth a visit!
The BEST Pub in all England and I have tried a few!!!! This is a gorgeous 16th century pub that serves generous portions of the most delicious high quality English food. Today we had delectable pea and ham soup made using the same recipe that has been followed for 100 years, beef, ham, egg mayonnaise and cheese sandwiches and salad, crusty bread and butter and chocolate biscuit crunch with cream. And delicious craft beer. A merry house and very kind service. Spot on!!!
Fabulous home-made Pea & Ham soup - what an enormous portion of total deliciousness! Friends enjoyed the huge and tasty cheese ploughman's. We'll be back for more of the same in the summer. Delightful owners too!
