Popped in for a late lunch after walking. We received a warm and hospitable welcome in this laid-back and stylish pub hotel even though we had not booked. We ordered sausage & mash and fish & chips. Pub classics, but here both dishes were on another level both in execution, taste and presentation - they were simply outstanding. I look forward to visiting again.
Delicious food, super seasonal and well balanced. The start of something special i'm sure! Dan and Tony did a great job with the customers showcasing their passion for both food and wine with lots of knowledge. I'd highly recommendService: 5/5
Such a friendly place with great customer service. Beer and food was great. We had pub classics, but they were a cut above what you would normally get. This is a nice spot if you just want a drink as well, so passing walkers are well catered for in that respect. When we visited the pub menu was a bit limited, but this may have been because they were offering a tasting menu at the same time.
Stayed here this weekend as we are up here from Somerset visiting family. Well what can I say....excellent customer service, fantastic Sunday roast and just a lovely dog friendly place where you will definitely relax. Will be back very soon. Would highly recommend!
We celebrated my Husband’s 60th birthday here and WOW! The food was out of this world and the team were superb! Every now and then, if you are very lucky, you trip over the next big thing ….and this is one of those times! I believe it is closing in the new year for a couple of weeks for a major refurb at the beginning of Jan so we will be making reservations for the opening because this place is going to be extremely busy so book now! Sincere thanks and all of the team and see you soon!!
Amazing food. Vegetarian options available. The rooms seemed old and in need of a refurbishment, shower a bit weird, but other than it was great. Lovely staff.
Popped in for a few drinks on Saturday afternoon, served wine in a chipped wine glass, poor choice of lagers, was charged a full bottle of lemonade without being told for a lager top, the gent who served us was okay however the majority of the other staff were miserable. One quite stroppy young lady who when she wasn't shovelling peanuts with her bare hand straight into her mouth then putting her hand back into the jar for more, I presume this large jar with a scoop was for serving to customers was slumping at the bar on a stool or swearing about missing deliveries. There was a really odd atmosphere, not enough tables for people not wanting to eat who are only stopping for a drink, such a shame this place is in a lovely location and has great potential.
We stayed here overnight during a weekend walking in the Chilterns. The location is nice, but hospitality extremely poor. 1. On arrival, we were asked to wait for our room to be prepared. To apologise for the wait, the staff offered us drinks, and billed them on us on departure. 2. The room had not been thoroughly cleaned. There was pubic hair all over the bathroom. When we complained, we received nothing more than a heartfelt "sorry" as compensation. 3. The temperature in the room was unbearable, about 26°C all night it was spring. This was probably due to a pipe running under the floor so nothing could be done by turning the heating off. 4. Dinner was mediocre, though dining hall staff friendly and professional. 5. Breakfast serivce extremely slow.
Booked a table for six on a Sunday to celebrate my 30th birthday with family based on good reviews. Put that we’d need a high chair for a baby and have a dog with us in the additional information, which I received email confirmation of. On arriving it was busy and loud in the bar area, and the staff were nice enough but clearly swamped. When reminded of our requirements, the response was, “We only have 2 high chairs and they’re both taken. We didn’t know you’d have a dog so we’ll need to find a different table”. When we said we’d put this in the booking info, they didn’t have a reason for why this wasn’t picked up by staff. After a wait they said they’d allow us in the restaurant area with the dog since it’d been a mistake, and gave us a huge table where we were all sat awkwardly far from each other no high chair. It was roughly a 40 minute wait to be offered drinks and given menus, by a chef who came out of the kitchen to wait tables as presumably no wait staff were available. We went to the bar in that time to try get drinks but were prompted to wait to be served at the table. Informed no chicken so only 3 options for main course - beef, fish or vegetarian. At this point we decided to cut our losses since we had no idea how long the food would take, and a hungry baby with us. We asked to just settle the drinks, and staff said they were on the house which was appreciated. I have no idea what was happening behind the scenes, but they clearly couldn’t cope with the number of people they had. If you can’t serve that many people, don’t waste their time and offer bookings. The fact it ruined an important celebration which we’d all traveled to attend was disappointing to say the least. Definitely don’t risk booking for a special event. Keep in mind previous good reviews are for the accommodation as well as the restaurant, and I’d guess from when they were under different management.
Booked for a table of 7 and at no point on the website did it say children weren’t welcome in the dining room. Given the choice we’d have chosen the main bar anyhow. Were told we all had to eat off the same menu “the saloon menu” and despite providing dietary requirement of a vegetarian at booking the only option on that menu was a pumpkin starter - no main. Though helpfully the waitress told us “there was fish”. Not really a vegetable is it? She then dropped a beer in our laps, got the drinks order wrong, and sat us at a table with too few chairs. The food was nice enough but nothing to write home about. Incidentally the dining room was empty and my 7yo ordered the mussels. Better options in the area that value service over pretension.
