We actually ate at the new place upstairs Mester's Social, and the food was amazing! Tasty, healthy and not too pricey. Small and popular though, I'd probably book on a weekend.

Spent many a Sunday morning at the bakery: getting some bread, a quick coffee or hot chocolate, a pastry or doughnut. Always fantastic quality - they make everything themselves (even the fillings for the doughnuts). Their bread is delicious. Lovely sourdough with only the slightest tang (not too strong like some places). Have also tried their new upstairs venture Mesters Social - which is a separate entity to the café below. Truly the best breakfasts in Sheffield: amazing baked eggs, huevos rancheros, sweet French Toast with fried chicken. And the coffee is great too. A minor gripe would be the cost of the filter coffee - £3 for their Kenyan grind. If it really is expensive coffee, fair trade etc. then fine. But if it's a huge mark-up, perhaps they could offer a free refill? Or make it slightly cheaper? I don't know. Either way, it's very tasty and doesn't detract from an excellent experience. Lovely food in a cool, Scandi environ. Top drawer.

I visited this place a couple of times before writing this review. I always had to wait a quite long time to be served despite of the short queue. As a pastry chef, I must say that most of their products are way overpriced and the only reason they are running is due to the fact that some of their product is a bit "different!" which does't mean they are good. I also need to mention that I had the best Lime Pie there ever. It was exceptional, but this wouldn't make me go back again. The place is tiny, chairs are too close to each other and it is next to a busy dirty mainroad.

The upstairs cafe is new and a nice space. Oddly, they don't share the menu so, for instance, if you want a decaf, you can't get upstairs because they sell it downstairs. Easily solved but bit of a no brainer :)

Forge is 1 of 2 extremely good bakers 4 thr small cakes (found so far) in Shef. -1 as carbohyrate count not listed for cakes eg so diabetics know how much they're eating.
