Just got back from the cutest little railway station in Wales and had to share! Seriously, the station itself is adorable, like something out of a storybook. And the train ride? Stunning views the whole way! I can't wait to go back and explore more of the area. Definitely worth a visit if you're looking for a charming day trip. #Wales #TrainJourney #ScenicRoute
The Ffiestiniog Railway journey to Portmadog is a picturesque ride through the rugged & mystic Snowdonia National Park. I took the one way trip from the bleak, slate quarried hills of Blaenau Ffiestiniog to the quaint harbour town of Portmadog on a quiet Sunday late Sept 2024. The views of mountains, lakes, streams & forests were enchanting even though the autumn colours were not in full display. The stark, grey landscape lightened up as the train chugged its way to Portmadog passing along the vast Tanygrisau Reservoir adding to the experience. On either side, there is a small gift/food outlet & amenities of course.nnFor the umpteenth time - I wished that I could also take pics standing outside of the train against the backdrop of the scenic landscape!nnOne of my highlights of the trip was chatting with the train driver at the start, who mentioned that they have had exchanges with the Puffing Billy Railway staff in Melbourne, which was delightful to hear. It was also a novelty to ride on Prince - the oldest narrow gauge steam engine. An enjoyable & memorable experience!nnCons: No commentary during the journey, the windows needed cleaning for clearer views & nil food/drinks trolley service. It was also quiet on the Blaenau side & not many Cafes were open to have lunch prior to the 12.45 pm departure.
Not just a place to catch one of the trains but a cafe with beer and a really nicely stocked gift shop. Everyone is super friendly and the loos are very nice.
The station is closely linked to the region's traditional slate industry and serves as the starting point of one of the world's oldest narrow-gauge railways. Opened in 1836, the Ffestiniog Railway was built to transport slate from the mountains of Wales to the coastal town of Porthmadog. Originally, the railway operated using gravity, with loaded wagons descending towards the coast and empty wagons pulled back uphill by horses. Later, steam locomotives were introduced to enhance efficiency. Today, it operates as a heritage railway, offering visitors a scenic journey through the stunning landscapes of Wales aboard historic steam trains.
Beautiful scenery on a 3 hour round trip to the slate mine town of Blaenau, well worth the cost
