Fenton House

Story

Fenton House is a 17th-century merchant's house in Hampstead in North London which belongs to the National Trust, bequeathed to them in 1952 by Lady Binning, its last owner and resident. It is a detached house with a walled garden, which is large by London standards, and features roses, an orchard and a working kitchen garden. The interior houses the Benton Fletcher collection of early keyboard instruments, some of which are often played for visitors during operational hours, and collections of paintings (including the collection of Peter Barkworth, and loans of Sir William Nicholson paintings), porcelain, 17th-century needlework pictures and Georgian furniture. It also has fine portraits of Dorothea Jordan, William IV, George IV, Frederick FitzClarence and Adolphus Fitzclarence - one of Jordan's daughters by William IV lived in the house.

I attended on a Sunday at 11am, and though the times via Gmaps do indeed state an 11:00am opening, the property was already open and a tour underway. Upon entry I was asked if I was a member or if I had pre-booked. I was neither, though I had a day pass and was welcomed. The interior isn't particularly spectacular, though the garden and overall aesthetic, inside and out was charming enough to warrant a visit. It's not so extensive as to take-up too much time. A pleasant 1 hour is suggested and I would indeed recommend to all.
Absolutely extraordinary historic home, full of many families fine collections of porcelain and the historic best harpsichord including the oldest one in Europe.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
The house is small but nice, could do with some information boards in the rooms to tell you what you're looking at. The garden is spectacular, really well maintained and colourful. It was a lot bigger than I was expecting. There is one toilet in the house. There's very limited street parking or if you have a blue badge you can phone in advance to pre book parking.
Garden and national trust property and site for the Idler Festival. Gardens are spectacular and close to the tube and buses.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Visited last weekend. The staff welcomed us very warmly. We thoroughly enjoyed this visit as the house, paintings, furniture and artifacts are very unique. The most amazing thing is there are many old harpsichords in working condition. We heard most of them as staff in the house are very generous. Last but not the least the garden is very beautiful and worth a visit. Lots of apple trees.
I recently had the chance to visit Fenton House and Garden. While the house, boasting a collection of paintings and musical instruments, didn't impress me as much, the gardens were a standout feature. They offered an array of horticultural wonders that left my wife and I brimming with ideas for our own future garden. The staff greeted us warmly and accommodated us graciously despite our last-minute visit. The volunteers were kind, though the narratives could use a bit more flair. The introductory tour of the house was interesting but paled in comparison to the allure of the gardens. On a sunny day, the gardens offer an idyllic spot for a picnic. While the house itself might not be the main attraction, I'd recommend Fenton House and Garden to anyone looking for garden inspiration or a peaceful retreat in the city.
Beautiful house, scarce on the furniture at the moment - and none of it is the original - built up from local collectors to the area. 17 authentic Harpsichord and occasionally a gentlemen who plays them will be in once a month to wow you with Tudor sounding tunes while you walk the grounds and house. fantastic gardens, hard to believe they’ve only been around for 30 years. Would highly recommend a visit.
4.5 stars. A National Trust home with a small entry fee. The home houses several collections as well as art works. There are needlework, porcelain and harpsichords. The harpsichords are played daily, a very good experience, you dont get to hear a harpsichord played very often. The gardens are worth the price of the visit. Essentially as they were originally designed with formal and working areas.
Lovely 17th century house in Hampstead. This National Trust house has a large collection of porcelain, tapestries, paintings and over musical instruments. It houses one of the oldest harpsichord in the world! Very lucky to actually meet Nick, a musician who played three of the harpsichords beautifully. This was oyr highlight of the visit. Nick also explained how the instruments worked and their history. Great to listen to him, he was amazing. The gardens are gorgeous and well maintained. There is an orchard with a large number of apple trees. Lots of visitors which was nice. The house is only open on Fridays and Sundays and you need to book your visit. If you are an NT member you will need your card even if you have a digital ticket. Absolutely no idea why. Fenton House is about a 15 minute walk from Hampstead Heath overground. You have to walk past another National Trust property to get there but 2 Willow Road is not open on the same days which is a shame.
Great house, a friend gave me a brief introduction about house, Goldfinger and pointed out the impressive art on the walls. Tickets must be booked in advance for guided tour. Read the room information!!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
