Mixed Experience - Tennis In The Dark, Anyone! After reading about the club and its history my expectations were rather high. I found some lovely aspects here but in the end my overall experience was of too many negatives. The good: Firstly, the club is the oldest existing lawn tennis club in the world having been in existence since 1860 prior to the addition of tennis. And it is set in a picturesque location beside the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. There are 2 carpet courts , 2 tarmac courts, 2 clay courts and 2 grass summertime only courts. So the facilities are very good. There is also a practice wall. The courts are well maintained and the nets are pristine. The lines are fresh. They also have scoring tags which is a pleasant feature. There are 5 days with social tennis at the club so there is plenty of opportunity to get play. And the courts are available free to members throughout the week all year round. In the summer months there should be no issues with lighting see negatives which will make playing better and more enjoyable. The Bad: The yearly subscriptions are rather high. Much higher than other similar tennis clubs. For what is on offer I felt they ride on the history of the club more than what is actually offered. The lighting is very bad. The main courts have decent floodlights but you are charged an additional £10 for half an hour useage. This will rapidly add up over the course of a year. This is even for social tennis users so you can double your annual membership costs. The lower four courts have the strangest lighting I have ever come across. There are four lights on either side which are really bright yet only 8 feet off the ground. So basically you are blinded while playing. Furthermore, once the ball is lofted high it is lost in the dark. The good thing is that these lights are free unlike the main courts, but they also turn off after every 30 minutes which intrupts play as you are suddenly left in the pitch black midgame and have to trek over to the light switch which is inconveiently located away from the courts. The lighting is perhaps the most shocking aspect of the club. There were a lot of bats and owls flying about too which with the poor lighting was rather off putting and a distraction from the tennis. Parking is limited and tight at the club end to about 8 cars. There are some more spaces though at the far end of the club. However, the narrow lane that services the club is unlit and becomes totally dark of the evening. That is both scary and dangerous. I would never allow a female or child from my household to be there late especially given the historical prostitution zone nearby on the Hagley Road. I was shocked they did not place some sort of lighting for safety at least. This is a personal one but I found the staff not particular friendly. I love a warm atmosphere but I just didn’t sense it. This is of course subjective. On the other hand I found the members warm and friendly so that was a plus. I also found the place to be in need of a little improvement with cracked walls and grounds. Having seen practice walls on the internet I expected more than the basic brick wall they have. Definitely a poor show for me. I personally would not recommend this club and would opt for another one of the local ones such as Lordwood.
Arrived for an open day and found everyone to be friendly and welcoming. Nice facilities and a good team of coaches. Sophie, Hollie and Maggie were all enthusiastic and put us through our paces. A top club.
Enrolled in exercise and tennis practice on a Friday for fun. Coaches very help full and lovely people. Even for old duffers like me!
A welcoming and beautiful venue with down to earth and friendly members. This is a true tennis club, which is both social and has a high standard of tennis. Situated close to the city centre and with many different types of Court, this is a club for families, students, professionals and those of all ages and abilities. So glad I stumbled across this place!

Fantastic club in a beautiful setting. Much better value than other clubs in the local area. A great, young coaching team and improved courts in recent months with further improvements on the way.
A Tennis Club steeped in history and situated in a spectacularly green area in the heart of Birmingham, all abilities are welcomed and there’s no better place to be in the city on a sunny day.
A friendly club in a fantastic location. Improvements being driven by the members who are committed to the principle of voluntarism. Come on down, play tennis and enjoy yourself
Great tennis club. Lovely setting. They have just had 2 more courts resurfaced.
Amazing grounds, nice folk, great tennis at a reasonable price. What's not to love?!
