Story

East Riddlesden Hall is a 17th-century manor house in Keighley, West Yorkshire, now owned by the National Trust. The hall was built in 1642 by a wealthy Halifax clothier, James Murgatroyd. The hall is a Grade I listed building. There is a medieval tithebarn in the grounds.East Riddlesden Hall perches on a small plateau overlooking a bend in the River Aire on its way downstream from the town of Keighley. Interesting features include well-restored living accommodation on two floors, two Yorkshire Rose windows, walled garden, the ruined Starkie wing and several ghosts (reputedly). A hiding place for Catholic priests was installed during the 16th century. The property was extended and re-built by James Murgatroyd and his wife Hannah, using local Yorkshire stone, in 1648. He also built other stone manor houses throughout the West Riding of Yorkshire. In the great hall, a small fireplace can be seen above the main fireplace, where the floor for the first floor accommodation was not built. James Murgatroyd was a Royalist and this can be seen in royalist symbols and graffiti on and in the building. For example, the Bothy (now the tea room and shop) has the heads of Charles I of England and Henrietta Maria of France carved in the topmost stone work.

Beautiful National Trust house. Gorgeous small lake with ducks. To visit the house in winter is by guided tour only. It was very interesting and the guide was itching to give more information but was tied by time limits. The house is well kept and furnished with period pieces. The beautiful autumn sunshine helped us enjoy the walk in the gardens. Lovely little shop and cafe.
A hidden gem full of history! Built in the 17th century, the manor house keeps some a of original features. The house is fully decorated to recreate the atmosphere and the lifestyle through time, having plenty of explanatory notes . The staff is also available to answer any questions, being present in all the main rooms of the house. The ceiling and the oak furniture are remarkable. After exploring the house, we visited the gardens and I was totally mesmerized by the symphony of the colours and fragrances. A proper English garden with scented roses, peonies, jasmine, yellow bells and many other flowers that are a pure delight for the senses. The alley with the apple and pear trees is well maintained. The surroundings are beautiful too. Situated near the main road, it's very accessible by bus. I will be back
An interesting visit. Car park has several levels. Interesting gardens. Cafe on two floors. Good shop. The house is open on two floors and houses many volunteers who are knowledgeable and happy to share with you. There is a children's trail adding interest for youngsters. Enjoyed the visit.
Nice house with beautiful lake. Very rugged and recommended for a walk in any season. Also recommend for young kids as there is a mud kitchen area and a little obstacle course next to the house. No swings or slides though, it's more for playing in the autumn leaves and mud kitchen. The surrounding land is also great for looking at birds and general walking. It's also situated in a quiet area so no road noise. Car park is a bit steep but no issues accessing it. Overall recommend for a couple of hours.
As you turn into the property you get the most fantastic view of the hall. The hall has a really interesting history. The gardens are very pretty. We especially liked the old barn, don't miss this, it is across the pond on the drive in.
A truly breathtaking experience!! A remarkable eye opening place! A joy to visit in spring. The garden full of bird song & rare species of flowers blooming forth. A pure joy for the senses. Great & helpful staff & a great gardener too with so much expertise to answer your questions. A peaceful haven of tranquility. It’s hard to believe the house dates back to 16th century as it’s very well looked after. A lovely day out for the whole family. A great cafe to eat in or take out to enjoy the surroundings. Bathroom facilities are available. A lovely lake with ducks for the young children to enjoy. Daffodils are springing forth everywhere. A real treasure to discover. It absolutely blew me away 10/10
Easy to walk to from bus stop, very busy with children during the holidays as expected but large enough to find peace in the gardens. Cafe very good spot for lunch, tuna and cheese jacket potato, coleslaw and tuna especially tasty. The gardens are beautiful
A lovely couple of hours spent here today. Interesting house and beautiful gardens. Old fashioned games for children to play with. Great cafe with friendly helpful staff and super cakes and great coffee tooVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
Very interesting house with beautiful gardens. The NT volunteers are so helpful and knowledgeable. Their comments bring the history to life. Great for children and a lovely café on site gas a good selection of food and beverages.
We've been national trust member for a while now and this place is our local. We went during the half term holidays and enjoyed the Easter trail. The house is fabulous and the staff are super knowledgable about the history and were eager to offer their knowledge as we walked round. I learnt a lot. The grounds are stunning, a herb garden, bug hotels and mud kitchen area to name a few spots and the lovely pond at the front of the property blessed with sweet little ducklings. My only disappointment is they have removed the play park and so left a blank spot where children used to enjoy playing, it meant we didn't stay as long as we would normally. Other than that its well worth a visit.
