Situated in a historic Martello tower, this is a free to enter museum, though donations are greatfully acceptednLoads of exhibits, many with a local connection.nStaffed by very enthusiastic & knowledgeable volunteers.nDog & child friendly. Kids allowed to have a go on some weapons & exhibits.
I am only adding this review to help others. It was closed when we went because the opening hours on Google are incorrect. The opening hours are on the sign I have posted a photo of- hopefully this helps someone else.nnNot many parking bays there either so walk if you can :
Free! The volunteers who run it only ask for a donation, but no pressure. Delightful place to idle an hour away. Worth going in even if you are not interested in Military History, for the far reaching views from the top of the Martello Tower.
This place is a hidden gem! I've lived locally for 40 years and only found out about it recently.nThe staff/volunteers are very friendly and knowledgeable.nThere is a nice variety of items in the exhibit.nThe museum is located in an old Martello fort. If you're comfortable with tight and twisty steps, you can venture onto the roof to see views of Point Clear, Mersea and Brightlingsea.nThere is a small gift shop just inside the entrance.nThe opening times are short, so check before travelling.
An absolute gem of a museum. I felt like I had stepped back in time.nto be able to view all thesenartefacts and local stories in the atmosphere of a martello tower. 3 volunteers, dressed in uniform, welcomed us in for free. This amazing little museum is financed only through donation. Well worth the trip.
