A very east London vibe bakery. Very popular so long queue expected at weekends. Pros first - staff are nice and lovely, and checked if there’s anything missing after serving each item. Food arrived fairly quickly considering it’s a busy Saturday morning. The eggs arrived piping hot which was good. However, probably the biggest con - the food was so BLAND! The scrambled eggs had nice texture but barely any flavour! No trace of butter, milk, or even egg. The chili butter on top was quite spicy and salty, which didn’t go really well with the eggs imo. The sourdough bread was really good though. This dish got so much potential but sadly just didn’t deliver… The croissant, well, quite different from many other croissants, had a good dense and chewy sourdough, which added a unique hint of sourdough taste to it. But it was a bit dry and a bit underwhelming. Coffee was good. Overall, stick to the baked goods and bread if you come here. Wouldn’t recommend people living far to travel all the way here just for the bakery. But if you’re in the area, no harm checking it out.
The food is tasty and the value for money very good for toasts. They forgot my order and had to wait beyond the stated 30min my friend ordered and got it more than 15min before but they were able to get it out fast after I said it to the staff. I would give it 5 stars if it wasn’t for the wilted greens which were very difficult to chew they seemed of good quality and big ones, but I think they needed more cooking time. They could offer poached eggs and avocado but that’s a personal wish. I liked that they have an open kitchen and you can see how they cook. The sweets were delicious and pricier for some of them rye chocolate cookie. I had the peanut butter blondie. I understand it’s quite standard in London and the reasoning behind but I don’t like the fact that they charge quite a bit more for dine in versus take away for sweets. That’s not standard in cafes in other countries and especially if sweets are already sold at a slightly high price IMO Dietary restrictions: Gluten, vegan, nut free
I’m a huge fan of E5 and everything they do. The brunch food is gorgeous and so are the bakes. Definitely get the choc rye cookie and thumbprint cookie, plus the almond or hazelnut??? pain au chocolate. It’s stunning!!Food: 5/5
Such a nice little cafe, lots of people and delicious pastries and cakes being served. I had a pain au chocolat probably the butteries I've found d in london and a choc cookie which was perfect. All the coffees being served out looked amazing aswell. Great for a place to study as they have Wi-Fi also and are open later than alot of other bakeries.
Came in the morning to try a few of the pastries: got the almond chocolate croissant very bready and subtle flavor, chocolate chip cookie pretty good and my favorite thing here, and seasonal financier. Fine spot but likely wouldn’t come back
I've gone a few times now and tried a variety of dishes. There are many good bakeries in London, but this one stands out. Food/drink: One of the best pan au chocolates I've ever had, good croissants as well, but could be a bit crispier on the outside. I tried the almond pan au chocolate and actually preferred the texture of the dough on the original. The rye cookie was delicious with a unique flavor and very soft. Their soups came with great homemade bread. The granola and yogurt tasted fine but they were frugal with their fruit, only giving a few peach slices. For that dish specifically, I'd go elsewhere. The chai latte was nothing special, a bit watery. I went a second time and asked for it stronger and it was perfect! Staff: This can be a hit or miss. On the weekend, the ladies running the front are kind, friendly, and give you a lot of attention despite being busy. On the weekdays, some staff are a bit dismissive, not saying anything or even smiling when I thanked them for delivering my food or clearing the table. They clearly seem to enjoy working together, which is nice to see, but they are lacking hospitality. This isn't a dealbreaker for me since the food and atmosphere is good. Went back on a Wednesday with different people who were much better. Environment: A fun, comfortable, place with a chic market feel. There is also an option to sit outside under a stylish awning surrounded by plants. I often sit inside by an outlet and do work on my laptop. Their laptop policy is a bit inconsistent and dependent on how busy they are. No laptops on the weekend other than one designated table. On the weekdays, they only allow laptops until 12pm. I tried moving to the laptop table, but it was full, so I had to leave. But on weekdays where they're less busy or maybe just different staff people could stay at their tables and work. They charge more to sit in the cafe, which isn't uncommon for London, but with the prices already steep, it's not great. It's also not entirely fair for costumers since they don't offer takeaway cups.
A nice place with a relaxed atmosphere. Was quite busy, but staff were still attentive and friendly. The scrambled eggs were excellent and substantial, with a lovely spicy tomato topping. Big selection of pastries also. We enjoyed the outside area.Food: 5/5
I’m a regular customer of this place. I LOVE their pain au chocolat they have a cheaper price for a takeaway option. Everything I tried so far was great- breakfast, bread, buying groceries. The coffee is average but the atmosphere and the food makes up for it. I highly recommend to go to this bakery after a morning swim at the nearby lido.
Edit** While I still fully believe in their ethos & like most of their products, some of the floor management and staff can be short/rude at times. I went over the weekend and had a request/feedback over the brunch I ordered. I felt like they were defensive and a bit rude to me based on this feedback. Finally, I was explained that the fridges weren’t working overnight and so bread was defective- which made sense hut wasnt made clear before I purchases. They should make that clear and reflect it in the prices…..I do also find that products are inconsistent at times. Not to say this is a terrible thing, I understand thats part of the charm of actually making things from scratch, etc. but just as an FYI that tour bread/pastries/food might taste different from one day to the next Overall, unfortunately I think experience and quality has gone down while prices have gone up ***. Some of the best sourdough bread and pastries croissants, black sesame, and vegan cookies are standouts in London! They mill their own flour and most things are locally sourced and organic! Breakfast and lunch dishes are reliably tasty FYI bfast ends at 11:30 lunch ends and 3. They also roast their own coffee beans and it’s consistently good as well : Appreciate their ethos of low waste! Lovely outdoor space and nice atmosphere! Can get very busy and pricey- but a place that’s worth it.
Nice cheddar and marmite bun, small selection of baked treats but really nice quality. The gentleman serving me was also very nice!Food: 4/5
