Ireland's only full-size heritage railway, north or south, running steam trains through St. Patrick's Country. We are a registered charity (NIC 101640) and operated entirely by volunteers.

Story

The Downpatrick and County Down Railway operates trains through the drumlin countryside of County Down - St. Patrick's Country - over the Quoile River and under the graceful Down Cathedral.

With a mix of steam and diesel trains, as well as vintage carriages, museums, and a signal cabin, there's plenty for train fans of all ages - from wee kids to "big kids". Run by volunteers, society membership entitles you to free travel.

Downpatrick was a wonderful experience. Being brought back in time by staff who were full of knowledge and old stories. I would highly recommend a visit.

A great day at the Easter Eggspress. A little hidden gem in Downpatrick that I had never visited before despite growing up in the area. My husband and son were here on St. Patrick's Day and loved it so we will be back for more events soon!

I highly recommend visiting this place. We went for a ride on the beautiful steam train and went into the museum and enjoyed some dressing up. The staff were very knowledgeable and were able to answer all of the questions we had. The entire family enjoyed it; kids, parents, grandparents and dog! Yes, they let us take the dog on the train!

Absolutely fantastic day trip.  The staff who run the trains are amazing and really love their job or maybe volunteering.  Can't recommend it enough..

Absolutely amazing, I'm in no way a train enthusiast but I was very impressed with not only the friendly, enthusiastic staff who clearly love volunteering here but also the museum of old railway cars and a vast amount of information & pictures about railways in Northern Ireland.  The short train journey was great - the steam train made it.  Young & old will love to visit.
