This is a really nice piece of living history, giving visitors some insight into what it was like to explore extreme conditions of the Antartic in a big wooden box. Interesting galleries and displays, the ship itself is in really good condition and has good access to all the important areas which you are free enjoy at your leisure. It was not very crowded on the day we visited.
Oh if you ever have the chance to come see Discovery. Then do we have had an amazing time. Learning listening and seeing the greatest of history. Oh to stan on this great ship. To hold the wheel where these , greatest men worked to reach the Antarctic. I loved everything Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
World class exhibition. Phenomenal, you'll need 2hrs here - at least. Even better than I imagined. I was really rushing and there's a lot to read and watch and was struggling to complete it all in 90 minutes. Extremely educational for all ages. One of the best exhibitions I've been to. Well done to everyone involved. Unfortunately I never had time to go up into the dome and you'll need to book a slot for this. This is one of the many reasons to come and visit Dundee.
What a great way to spend a few hours. A great time was had by myself, wife and elderly parents. You look around a very nice gift shop with some helpful staff. Next you can walk through a fabulous display that tells you about the history of the RRS Discovery, it's crew and it's exploratory roles. Next comes the ship itself, wow, it really was like stepping back into the old days of adventure and new discoveries. The staff on board are really helpful and informative, don't simply say hello and walk past them, they really do know this ship like the back of their hands. All in all it was well worth going. We all enjoyed it more than we thought we would.
Super experience, clearly still improving. The ship is unexpectedly original and, as such, the stairs are challenging, but it makes you feel that you are there as it sails for the frozen wastes of Antarctica. The exhibition is a little difficult to navigate at present as you have to go right through the galleries to start at the end. The accompanying film is outstanding do not miss!
Excellent morning out. Was initially put off by reports of shortage of parking if in a motorhome. Due to this we visited mid week in the morning and had no trouble. Parking for up to 3 hours was a reasonable £4.40p. Entrance fee currently reduced due to building work.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
This was an unexpected joy to find and visit. Undergoing renovations, the small museum and visitor centre is packed with interesting stuff to see, watch and do. The ship itself is a delight to explore, although the internal steps are not for the unsteady. The difference between the crew quarters and the officers mess is a stark lesson on class division.
Took my 5 year old and he loved it, we all did. The ship and museum were amazing and we learned so much, the gentleman explaining all about the bell was fantastic. The cafe served delicious sandwiches that kept us going until dinner and the gift shop has some wonderful books and souvenirs. Best of all we were issued free passes to return anytime we want in the next year for free!
During lockdown having used some Tesco points to buy vouchers for this exhibition, and as they were about to expire, I decided to make a long day trip across the country to visit. On hindsight I might have been better to lose my £15 in vouchers. It certainly cost me much more in petrol. The exhibition was undergoing work and we were warned about this, but the instructions were rather vague with a layout chart on the wall being waved at us. At reception the assistant wasn't too sure on how to deal with the vouchers, but they were finally accepted and processed, so as a result we didn't pay much extra. When we left the area we saw a notice 'To the ship', so that's where we started. And that's where we went wrong! The ship itself was a great disappointment with very little to see. Again there were notices about work being undertaken. On returning towards the reception area, thinking what a journey for nothing, we then noticed a sign to the exhibition, where we entered at the 'end' and made our way through various rooms filled with information about the Discovery and her voyages. Of course, we did it all back to front. There certainly was a great deal of information, a bit too much to absorb in one visit. However our tickets allow us entry for a year, so perhaps if we are travelling all the way to Dundee for another reason we may give it a second visit and attempt to get the direction of travel right next time.
Exhibition is well worth a visit also tells the story very well,a tour through the ship was excellent, plenty of reading to be done . Me and my wife visited Verdant Works and we got an annual ticket for both places .Wait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
