We had a lovely lunch here as always. Staff were very attentive without being intrusive. Cozy atmosphere with log fire burning. Good choice on the menu with great selection of mains and some of the old pub favourites to choose from. I have been going to The Devonshire for many years and have never been disappointed. You get what you pay for... Quality ingredients prepared by a chef who cares about his food and pays great attention to detail. Then delivered to the table by pleasant professional waiting staff who know what they are doing and do it well. A pleasure!
Amazing sausage and mash. A lovely and patient team who were very accommodating of our 18 month old! They even lent us an umbrella for the way back to our air bnb :- Didn't stay here so couldn't comment on the rooms but breakfast smelt delicious when I dropped the brolly back.
We went for my birthday for an overnight stay, the room was lovely, the dinner was excellent. The breakfast was amazing, everything was freshly prepared and the staff were friendly and attentive. The hotel is a beautiful grade II former hunting lodge set on the green of Long Sutton in the heart of Somerset. Definitely recommend a visit even if just for a drink, lovely open fire place, very cosy on a winter's evening. Rooms: Beautifully appointed room, very comfortable bed. I loved the botanical toiletries, made by 100 Acres which smelled heavenly. Nearby activities: If you like golf there is a great course very close by. If the seaside is more your thing, you can visit the beaches at Lyme Regis, West Bay or maybe Burton Bradstock. The Somerset Levels are great for walking or you can visit National Trust houses such as Lytes Cary Manor or Montacute House.
We were lucky enough to be invited to a family meal to celebrate a birthday, which was in The Stables private dining. The food and service were exceptional.Service: 5/5
Whenever I drive some 560 miles from the Highlands of Scotland to visit family, relatives and friends, I make a point of visiting typical English country pubs. Strange as it may seem, there's no exact equivalent in Scotland. Based in Curry Rivel, a few weeks ago I was invited to Sunday Lunch at the Devonshire Arms, Long Sutton, Langport. This most attractive establishment has a bar, restaurant and bespoke 9-bedroom accommodation. It was my first time there. I was mightily impressed for a number of reasons. Owned by Philip Capon, the building is a Grade II former hunting lodge, set adjacent to the picturesque village green of Long Sutton in the heart of the Somerset Levels close to the A303 near Somerton. It's just under two hours from London by car or train. One might be forgiven for querying why the pub's not called the Somerset Arms. Well, I've learned the Devonshire Arms, constructed in the 17th century, came under the ownership of the 4th Duke of Devonshire in 1753 as part of the Bolton Abbey Estate. However it was the 5th Duke, who sealed its place in history. The Duke, realising the importance of visitors to the area, established miles of footpaths in the locality. The façade and exterior stone walls retain much of their original features and character. Once inside though, one's met with a surprisingly chic, contemporary style. Quality exudes from every nook and cranny. As with any organisation, it's the people who work there that make things happen. The service was seamless, second to none. No service with a snarl here. On the contrary, unobtrusive efficiency, high degrees of professionalism, unflustered at the busiest of times were the hallmarks. We were served by Julia, Scalette, Maya, Rae, Ashley and Frankie. Without exception, they anticipated our needs, almost before we realised them ourselves. Nothing was too much trouble. We were not rushed. Properly trained, they clearly enjoyed their work. I had no idea whether they were students or part-/full-timers, the standards were the same. The seating arrangements were both comfortable and spacious. A most pleasant ambience. No noisy musak preventing conversation. There's a large walled garden and sheltered courtyard for wining and dining outdoors. Incidentally, in Italy 'al fresco' means 'in prison' cool places. "Vorrei mangiare fuori", will avoid the waiter's laughter. The quality of cuisine was first class. Ample portions even for the heartiest of appetites. The menu was wide ranging, catering for myriad tastes and nutritional requirements...locally sourced ingredients. The bar was well stocked with an excellent choice of wines, spirits, beers, ales, soft drinks and non-alcoholic beverages. Catering is an art. All the more so in a hospitality industry with some 400,000 vacancies. Staff retention is key. The Devonshire Arms scores highly in this regard. The perfect destination for a day out from London. Dog friendly. Good value. Highly recommended.
This hotel / English Country pub is just what you need. The team are excellent. The rooms are spotless. Food 10 out of 10. I can't fault it and I didn't plan a visit. I am so happy to say what a find!Rooms: 5/5
Lovely building, friendly service. The roast beef and roast chicken is up there with the best I’ve had. The meats were a fantastic quality so absolutely no waste, chicken seasoned perfectly. The Yorkshires were amazing, a little sweeter than usual which worked very well. Roasties were perfect and there was about 6 different types of other veg on the plate. The gravy was just right and the horseradish had a decent kick to it. Will definitely return if in the area again.
Lovely place and really kind hosts. Food was great and it’s a good stop if you’re on a journey. Nice locals as well. Thank you!
Disappointing. Having had previously good experiences, we booked for a birthday meal with friends. There were 4 adults and one 11 year old in our party. We were made to feel uncomfortable from the outset, and felt the staff were quite 'frosty' towards us. We made the mistake of asking if there were any 'specials' as the menu is quite limited for anyone with special dietary requirements. We were told abruptly 'no'. The waitress was particularly stony faced with us, and we felt as though we were being 'tolerated' rather than welcomed. The two stars we feel is fair, as the food was good, however the service was shockingly rude throughout the whole evening. We felt like the staff were looking down their noses at us for some reason. We'd have to think carefully before returning.
I have been coming here for many years now and I still look forward to my visit. The rooms are ok and always clean and we'll presented but this place is all about the food. All the components of a good evening are there, an excellent menu with local ingredients, good service and an excellent bar. If you haven't tried it yet and you are in the area it is well worth a visit.
