Counihans Bar is another brilliant pub in Cork City center! They have a good selection of different beers and stouts to choose from and since it was Summer time I decided to have a couple of pint bottles of Bulmers cider. As far as stout goes, I think that this is more of a Murphy's pub than a Guinness pub as most people were ordering Murphy's. I did however order one Guinness to try it and it was only ok. Layout: The bar is fairly big and is split into a few areas. You have a bar counter and snug area when you enter from Pembroke Street. The snug is really nice as there is a large table that can fit about 6 to 8 people. If you enter from Phoenix Street the bar is a little retangular area with a bar counter and few tables and chairs. There is a larger area out the back with a dance floor area and more seating and another bar counter to order from. Decor: Counihans is an old timey bar is decorated in such fashion. Timber lines the walls and there are pictures and flags decorating the bar. There is a fire place in the area off of Pembroke Street which may or may not be functional as it was in July when I visited the bar and it was not lit. The Staff: The staff are friendly and welcoming. The counter service was a little slow but I feel that they were training a new bartender at time that were there. I would ask for your reciept as one member of our group was charged twice for some of the items on her drink order, it was a mistake on the bartenders part however, it can't hurt to double check. Overall Opinion: Counihans Bar is an old school bar right beside the GPO in the city center! I highly recommend stopping by for a pint of beer or cider, might want to give the Guinness a skip or else order a pint of another stout like Murphy's instead. Definitely a great bar for if you want to have a good auld chat with friends! Solid 7 out of 10 pub for me! Parking: Counihans does not have its own parking area however, there is street parking nearby on South Mall St. This is paid street parking so be aware and make sure you have a ticket. Also, there are a number of paid parking garages in the general area of the bar and they are only a short walk from the bar. Tip: you can also use the "Cork Park By Phone" parking app to park on the streets in Cork City. Wheelchair accessibility: Both entrances from Pembroke Street and Phoenix Street are level and there is space in the various sections of the bar for a wheelchair user to maneuver around. The bathroom that I used was located upstairs and the stairs I felt are a little complicated as there was 3 flights to them. At the time I visited, I was using two crutches and no body pointed me to a toilet on the ground floor which would have been better for me at the time. I also didn't notice a wheelchair accessible toilet downstairs either. Hopefully I am wrong but there definitely should be a wheelchair accessible toilet downstairs. I feel that this basic utility that modern popular bars should have! Hopefully someone can shed some light on this and let me know if there was one and I just didn't see it.
Bar staff were very polite, except the security guard was a joke. Three of us sitting down minding our own business and apparently it was ‘illegal’ to play cards in a pub. We weren’t playing for any money which was obvious as there was nothing at the table and we were using a fairly leisurely deck of cards. He told us we would be kicked out if we didn’t put them away. We weren’t shouting or yelling or misbehaving or anything like that. We asked other bouncers throughout the night and they told us they’ve never heard of that in their life time of bouncing. We also researched it too and found out that it doesn’t say anything about being ‘illegal’. Ruined the night, won’t be going back here again.
Very quiet there for a Sunday, especially with a Cork Hurling match on tv. Good service, plenty of tv's and a big screen. Decor.has not changed much over the years.Service: 5/5
good vibes, nice music, great choice of beers, not too crowded , great stuffFood: 5/5
I was going to meet my friends for a beer at this pub. I was the first to arrive and I tried to call my friends under the porch, since it was raining. In less than 3 seconds I should admit that I was impressed a bouncer materialised and told me to leave , that I cannot stay under the porch. I tried to explain that I want a table for 6 but he didn’t let me talk and told me to leave again. Of course I told my friends to meet in another place. The pub was completely empty on a Friday night why I am not surprised? , so probably it was better for them if we didn’t bring our money somewhere else.
Busy on Christmas Eve with good atmosphere fun and laughter and nice vibe staff and door staff, highly rated city centre venue I found the price of my pint at 7 . 3 Euro quite expensive even for a city centre venue therefore I moved to a plush city centre venue which was more than 2 euros cheeper
Nice drinks and friendly staff. Busy city centre pub with a good selection of drinks and a great atmosphere and passing trade. Enjoyable visit.
First time in here since December 2019, still a great pub and a great pint thank you! Will be back again soon I hope
