Clitheroe Castle Museum

Story

Clitheroe Castle is a ruined early medieval castle in Clitheroe in Lancashire, England. It was the caput of the Honour of Clitheroe, a vast estate stretching along the western side of the Pennines. Its earliest history is debated but it is thought to be of Norman origin, probably built in the twelfth century. Property of the de Lacy family, the honour later merged with the earldom and then Duchy of Lancaster. Given to George Monck, 1st Duke of Albemarle in 1660, the castle site remained in private ownership until 1920, when it was sold to the people of Clitheroe to create a war memorial. Today the buildings on the site are the home of Clitheroe Castle Museum. The keep is the second smallest surviving stone-built keep in England. The castle was listed as a Scheduled Monument on 10 April 1915 (and later, under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979 law). It was Grade I listed on 19 May 1950.

Our 1st visit to this location was due to being in the area for a catch-up with friends and we weren't disappointed. Great location with great views over the surrounding town and landscape, would recommend a visit when in the area....
Ok museum set over two floors. Lots of local history including Pendle Witches and local geology. Could do with more detailed info on castle history.
Had a great time here on an overcast day.. The castle itself is only small but the grounds are nice to walk with a great panorama. The museum is worth the trip. Did a cool treasure hunt for a competition entry. Lots of interesting facts, items and things to listen to. Staff were very friendly. Parked at the castle longstay carpark for £2.10.
Another museum worthy of support and a visit. We visited in February 2024 after finding the castle closed. All the usual facilities onsite. Breathtaking views of Pendle Hill.
Stunning castle and scenery. Peaceful little town. Unfortunately could not visit the actual castle keep due to maintenance. The museum however was very cheap, free for under 18s, and great fun to walk round. More like a big house with different rooms themed to suit each story being told. Many cool artifacts such as Roman coins and old items of clothing etc. Overall a pleasant visit with fascinating history - but a shame about the castle keep itself.
