Chesterfield Parish Church

Story

Chesterfield Parish Church is an Anglican church dedicated to Saint Mary and All Saints, located in the town of Chesterfield in Derbyshire, England. Predominantly dating back to the 14th century, the church is a Grade I listed building and is most known for its twisted and leaning spire, an architectural phenomenon which has led to the church being given the common byname of the Crooked Spire. The largest church in Derbyshire, it lies within the Diocese of Derby, in which it forms part of the Archdeaconry of Chesterfield.HistoryThe church is largely medieval with Early English, Decorated Gothic and Perpendicular Gothic features built of ashlar. It comprises a nave, aisles, north and south transepts and the chancel which is surrounded by four guild chapels. The north transept was rebuilt in 1769 and George Gilbert Scott carried out a restoration in 1843, when a new ceiling was installed and a new east window inserted with stained glass by William Wailes of Newcastle. A new font was donated by Samuel Johnson of Somersal Hall. The church reopened on 9 May 1843.

Chesterfield's best known landmark, St Mary and All Saints also known as Crooked Spire Church and is a tourist attraction too bringing more visitors in town. Evidence of church on site dates to the Anglo-Saxon era from 890 to 1050 AD. There's mentioned in history of a church in Chesterfield during the 11th century reign of Edward, and historians believe there was also a Norman church, underneath on the present church construction started in 1234 AD. It's crooked twisted Spire is really interesting. It's weight 32 tones, 228 feet high and 9 feet 5 inches leaning from it's centre. It's twist cased by when wood dry after construction and reshape the spire in such way. Btw chur h itself is till holding a lot of history inside and decor & layout of everything really give you the sense of history even you can smell it. Worth to visit.
Beautiful church... Some wonderful architecture and great historyWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
A beautiful and iconic church. The last week of November and beginning of December hosts the Christmas Tree Festival to support and advertise local businesses and charities and help raise funds for the church itself. A few nice gift items are available to buy in the entrance vestibule. Please note that there are no public toilets in the church itself.
What an amazing church. Passing Chesterfield and popped in for a spot of lunch and to view this amazing twisted spire. Apparently cowboy builders were around in the 14th century! After the black death caused a shortage of skilled workers, the spire was made from green wood and no cross beams. This caused the spire to twist, then they added the lead tiles and this made it lean! It is a very wonderful thing to view. Inside the church is full of beautiful carvings and stained glass windows. As you walk around, the history of the church is told. Absolutely worth a visit, free entry, very cheap parking across the road from the church, and the town is very quaint with all amenities required. A very positive experience on our visit in May 2023.
Wonderful and peaceful with some amazing stained glass windows I love the twisty spire Still not sure how it ended up like that, but I'm glad it did Worth a visitWait timeNo wait
Went there a few years ago and till this day I remember wanting to go inside and not being allowed to by one guy. One of his colleagues intervend and I was evenyually let in but the way they treat turists who are guilty of being born with dark hair and dark eyes goes beyond rudeness. It's a shame really, it would be an interesting place to visit.
What a stunning Church. The twisted spire aline is worth a visit. Many stories as to why the spire is twisted. Beautiful stations of the cross around the walls. The stain glass windows were stunning, the one depicting St Francis of Assisi was fabulous. The high altar had a beautifully ornate altar cloth.
I have yet to come across a Church that does not have some redeeming architectural features on our coach journeys, some Churches being more grand than others. But this Church does require a few minutes of your time to appreciate it's interior splendour. Yes the twisted spire is it's recognisable feature but inside it has some intricate features worth seeing, the stained glass windows being just some of them. A nice Church.
Sick big church. Open to public every day. And free unlike some like the one in York.Visited onWeekdayWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedNo
Incredible place to visit. The spire, yes it is crooked, it's old woodwork that has twisted over the years and has now become an historical building and not only a religious building. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly, and the guided tour is well worth it. The church is a must to visit, if you are in the city, to gain photographs of the spire or just to pray in the tranquil atmosphere of the church
