Came looking for this place after I'd been to the same one in Lewis on one bonfire night and tried their amazing daal. There was hardly anyone in but that might have been because their credit card machine wasn't working and they were only accepting cash. We had the Chaula's Veg mix platter to start which had some nice seasoned and flavoured Samosa, Kachori, Petis, Patra and Bhajia, if you're a big eater order the small platter for yourself. The Tarka Daal was a little salty for my tastes but the Vegetarian Biryani was spot on. All under £18 for two without drinks was excellent value. The loos were not great, but if you want a good curry with quick service then you'll struggle to find better at their prices.
Ordered as a takeaway through deliveroo and what a disappointment. The picture shows my vegetable biryani and initially I thought the black things were mushrooms but on closer inspection they were actually cauliflower!! I have never seen a black cauliflower and the rest of the veg was stringy and old. Rice was undercooked and there was also a hair in itI have red hair and this was a long black one so definitely not my own. The garlic naan had raw garlic on it and the Dahl was not seasoned and completely lacked spice. Tried to complain but no answer on the phone as I guess it was late on a Friday night. AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!!
I love Indian food but felt this was not the best. Mine was overwhelmingly cumin-y and others at the table had sauces that were overly turmeric-y. Service was fantastically slow as well with us requesting a jug of water and some drinks 3 or 4 times before anything appeared despite being almost empty. The waitress was nice but the waiter we had kept leaning across people - even whilst eating. Shall overeat elsewhere in the future.
I have been using this restaurant since it opened in Brighton and before that used the Lewes branch. It does a good range of vegetarian dishes and all of them that I have eaten are delicious. I understand from my meat eating friends they are good too. It is reasonably priced, excellent service and nice décor. Highly recommended and much better than most Indian restaurants.
Having waited half an hour for our food, it was a good, if rather ordinary, Indian meal. When the bill arrived it was slightly steep for the food we had just eaten. We were then informed that they couldn't accept card payments because their machine was 'not working', so I had to walk to the bank to get cash. Not what I expect from a properly run restaurant. Having eaten here before I am now certain never to return. With so much competition from restaurants which can outdo this place on every count, I shall never return.
Food is really bad. It seemed as if the food was cooked in age old oil. When I complained, I didnt get any satisfactory response from their end. They were treating us like we had made a mistake by visiting their place. This is really bad, especially considering all other good restaurants around. Service is very slow too. We had to wait for more than half an hour for our food, and that too when we were the only customer present. Cant imagine the waiting time if the restaurant is full. I would not recommend this to anyone who is fond of good food and service.
We originally visited this restaurant rated 4 stars for Christmas day a few years ago. My in laws have returned multiple times in recent years and we decided to go again this year and unfortunately this year the experience fell so short of the mark. The senior member of staff didn't seem to want to be there and the other waiter serving didn't smile once throughout the evening. The service was terrible, unorganized and haphazard throughout our evening. There was no flexibility from the staff with regards to additional requests a garlic karma nann, just brush the keema nann with garlic butter. In all, the food was superb but let down so dramatically by the poor service it isn't enough to balance things out and we will not be returning in future which is a real shame. In conclusion, if you like poor service and great food, knock yourself out. If not, avoid at all costs.
We nearly cancelled our reservation after spotting several very negative reviews both on TripAdvisor and Google, but eventually we decided to go ahead, and I'm certainly glad we did. While the service was definitely a bit on the odd side smiles were few and far between, dishes were placed on our table without much of an explanation, and the wait staff really didn't look too happy to be there, the food was very, very tasty and quite authentic. The mixed grill starter was extremely well seasoned and the chutneys and raita were fresh. The chilli paneer was also particularly good. The murg makhani was a bit on the sweet side but I think most would like it, while the prawn biryani definitely hit the spot. Am surprised that some people have commented on the portions being too small, they certainly felt more than enough and we left the restaurant feeling very full indeed. The service too was timely, we didn't end up waiting too long for meals or menus, so I'm not sure where the bad experiences are coming from. All in all, a very pleasant visit. Good Indian food at decent prices, and we will most likely return.
Excellent service. We hired Chaula’s for our wedding, in a field in Sussex. Catered for 200 people. Everyone loved the food and wanted her restaurant details. They were very helpful on the run up to our wedding, and were super professional on the day. Thank you Chaula’s
Amazing food and service with a very cosy atmosphere. We spent this weekend in Brighton from London. I never expected it to taste so good. I was pleasantly surprised by the flavours, so fresh. Everything is cooked fresh. This place is well worth visiting. I would've paid more
