Cafe Mumbai is a lovely restaurant tucked in Totnes. It was open on a Sunday contrary to many places. It is a popular place. The food is delicious I recommend Mango Lassi, Chana Laow, Chapati, Garlic Naan and Paneer dishes. Veg pakoras weren't great. I took away one star because the place is small and gets crowded quickly I recommend you book.. Also, the service could improve a little bit : one of our waiters kept asking us "Is that all you ordered?" when serving our food. It makes it a little bit stressful to have to mull over what we ordered even though another waitress wrote everything down. Another waiter also took forever to bring the bill so we had to go up an ask another waitress. Overall a great cafe that can improve on small details. Keep up the good work! Vegetarian options: Many veg options which are delicious!
Stunning food Home style menu, traditional specials on the board that included hake and salmon. The best naans I have ever tasted. I would definitely recommend a visit here.
Pretty bland. Chicken tikka massala looked and tasted like Chicken Korma. Bombay aloo was quite mushy and no spinach. Chicken tikka main was purely marinated Chicken pieces, no onions etc, very dry. Garlic naan soggy with what looked like a garlic oil. Would definitely not buy from there again. Very disappointing.
Disappointing meal, although my local friends considered it a good restaurant. I only had one dish, vegetable dansak. It was sweet and under spiced. The garlic Nan was very tasty. I assume it is run by Bangladeshis, as are most so called “Indian” restaurants in the UK. I have nothing against Bangladesh or it’s people, in fact I have enjoyed several trips there, but don’t feel their food is renowned, like real Indian food is, from say Kerala or Tamil Nadhu. Cafe Mumbai is a bit overpriced for what you get, both food and drinks. The staff were nice, the service fast enough, the atmosphere is pleasant. I would not return.
Love the food here. The naan bread is to die for.Food: 5/5
We were very disappointed with a number of elements of our indian restaurant experience; firstly the food - the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Chicken Korma not only looked exactly the same but they tasted the same as did pretty much the Butter Chicken and the Chicken Pasada. - all these curries had too much sugar in them. - the Vegetable Jalafrezi was really inedible and seemed like poorly made watery veg stew with some curry powder in it. - the chutneys served with the poppadoms were not of a high calibre. The ‘mango chutney’ was a tasteless sweet goo and the raita we ordered as a side dish was just plain yogurt with a little watery cucumber dropped on it. Secondly the service; - the school kids that we left to walk around and do the service I believe had never actually been to a restaurant before and therefore had little idea of how to make the customers feel taken care of. I think some training would be very helpful for everyone’s experience. For example, when additional cutlery was required you would think that placing it in the appropriate positions on the table could be a basic expectation rather that it just being dumbed on the table in a pile. In essence we shall not be returning to this restaurant and would not suggest our friend to do so either as I can only hope a more authentic Indian restaurant exists with owners that are genuinely committed to an enjoyable experience and good food.
Friendly staff, clean and comfortable. Food on the pricey side for what it is, and chickpeas were under seasoned. We particularly enjoyed the peshwari naan but you'll need to order one per person.
The food has improved MASSIVELY recently. It's absolutely delicious and always ready on time, with a menu which seems to be growing- and loads of vegetarian options. I'm a coeliac and they are one of the very few places I trust. They are scrupulous at making sure no gluten contaminates my food. The customer service is great.
It is with great sadness that I have to write this review, but unfortunately the food from Cafe Mumbai gave my partner and I food poisoning. We both intermittently fast and only eat one meal per day, so we are very confident that the food poisoning came from Cafe Mumbai's food. I emailed the manager who initially responded but has subsequently ignored my emails and is unwilling to engage or take responsibility. The food itself was average, but admittedly the portion sizes were extremely small, unnecessarily so. I am obliged to report Cafe Mumbai to the Food Standards Agency and do not recommend that others eat here until they have been investigated.
Lovely meal, fresh, tasty and service was polite and friendly. We had a special fish dish with aubergine and chicken bhuna. Especially enjoyed the peshwari naan which was delicious! Would come back
