Last minute trip to get us in the Christmas spirit. It was lovely, lights were well layed out and were very effective. Excellent food area with something for most people. Excellent toilets, well kept and clean considering the footfall and underfoot conditions. It was quite busy and we had to wait a few times to get the best view of the lights but this did not detract from the visit at all. All in all I would recommend if you like this sort of thing.
A beautiful expansive park right in the city centre behind Cardiff Castle. The land was once part of the castle grounds, developed in the nineteenth century when the estate was inherited by the Bute family. It is now a public open space filled with tarmac paths, trees, a community orchard, and green open spaces.nnThe Secret Garden coffee shop sits fairly near the city centre and offers good gluten free options as well as an information centre which tells the history of the castle and park as well as current climate-friendly management.nnThere are lots of information points explaining the background to the park, current wildlife friendly management practices and various statues and points of interest. The notice boards on the Millennium Bridge show that there are a lot of interesting social and educational activities going on.nnAs you head further out of town you reach green open space, Sophia Gardens cricket ground, football and rugby pitches and a trim trail.nnThe park extends along the River Taff out of Cardiff, eventually to Llanduff and beyond to the nature reserve. There is a variety of paths - tarmac and woodland trails allowing runners, cyclists, walkers, dog walkers and commuters to share the space which everyone does very amicably.nnThe bird life along the river, especially at the weirs, is fascinating- cormorants, geese, swans and ducks as well as a variety of the usual robins, wrens, warblers and tits. You may be lucky enough to see a kingfisher I heard but didn’t see - was too busy admiring the juvenile cormorants perching on the edge of the weir.
Visited the beautiful Christmas light experience. The weather was awful but none of us noticed until we returned to our cars at the end. Four adults of varying abilities and a nearly four year old were entertained and amazed by the displays. The food and drink area provided shelter from the rain and the hot chocolate kept us all going. Staff were helpful and friendly.
Nice morning run through Bute park. Rainy and 12 degrees C this morning, so nice and fresh and crisp. Lots of leaves are down now but still some beautiful fall colours. We ran down to the second bridge from the south to the man-made waterfall area. Very peaceful and serene with the sound of the water crashing with the birds in the background. This is a great park for a walk, a stroll, walking the dog or a great run, and probably a picnic too in better weather!
Quite busy. Visited for the lights walk. Took an hour to walk round the lights walk. Decent toilets no queue. Plenty of food stalls, and marshmallows. Not bad. Worth the visit to Bute park in the dark!
