Brandwood End Cemetery

Story

Brandwood End Cemetery is a cemetery located in the Brandwood ward of Birmingham, England.HistoryUntil the early 19th century the Church of England church yards and burial grounds were the only major places available for burials. By that time these ancient burial grounds were becoming overcrowded, causing the burials to become shallower and the graveyards to be considered as unsanitary health hazards. Added to this was the massive increase in the population, particularly in the expanding urban industrial areas, which increased the demand for burial space. The situation was further exacerbated by the increased death rate during periodic epidemics such as cholera, occurring unchecked within these overcrowded urban environments. These burial problems were resolved with the development of ‘public cemeteries for all’. This was initially not under the direction of local or central government, but under Joint Stock Companies for profit. For example, Key Hill Cemetery in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, founded in 1834, was a local example of such a Joint Stock venture. However, these efforts by private enterprise could not, by themselves, solve the overall problem, and as a direct result of the cholera epidemics of 1831-1832 and 1848-1849 central government had to take action. Between 1852 and 1857 a series of Burial Acts were passed, which established a national system of public cemeteries under the direction of local Burial Boards. These Boards were responsible for the interment of the dead; could build and manage new cemeteries; and, charge the expenses to the Poor Rate.

No problems here. I have been visiting over45years and COVID aside visit multiple times every year in all weathers and find it a tranquil setting to reflect and remember loved ones. Graves are maintained and grass is cut regularly. Overall I cannot complain.
Got here at 3.30 on Boxing Day and the gate was closed even though the sign said “gate closed at 4 pm” . How is this acceptable ? ! I tried the cemetery number and no answer
I wouldn't even rate it a one star they have lost my family's grave and refusing to give me the location of it and others grave have been damaged with there so cold staffing going around making sure that the graves are being respected. There is no other cemetery in Birmingham that is running with so low standards the staff do as they please by being unhelpful to visitors and being rude to people on the phone when they make inquiries the staff have no manners or empathy towards people. I know they have done something to my loved ones grave thats why they are being rude and disrespectful over the phone to cover up their own mess that they have made.
Don't believe other reviews,This cemetery is a discrace, The roads are so full of pot holes you can't drive without hitting them. Most old grave headstones have fallen over and left. Most new headstone are leaning terribly and left.People have trees and bushes growing on their graves.Grass is cut badley and left on the graves . Only one water point.Benches are surrounded by long grass. The lack of care is Discusting. Please go and see for yourself.
My 17mth old son is buried here and the best cemetery I found, very quiet and respected place. Its my thinking place and love it here. He would of been 18 yrs old now and still love coming to chat with him. R.I.P Kyle xxx
Not Happy at all. We went to the cemetery this afternoon as we were told it would be open from 4.30PM to 6.30PM we waited until 4.45PM still closed it was chaos with traffic so we left and went home.
Having been advised by a notice on the gates and also the web site that the cemetery would be open the gates were closed we were not the only families that were there to visit loved ones I am sure the others that were there also felt frustrated
I think it a nice place, could do with cutting grass, and also, taking care of the grass after.my grandad man dad r there.its lovely place .I will be put there to when,it's my time .I'm thing of get a beach.its alot better place than where my mom is,in handworth.as there's no room to move.anyway thank u.and I'd love to see the church all back to how it should be,it so nice to look at.
