Brandwood End Cemetery

Story

Brandwood End Cemetery is a cemetery located in the Brandwood ward of Birmingham, England.HistoryUntil the early 19th century the Church of England church yards and burial grounds were the only major places available for burials. By that time these ancient burial grounds were becoming overcrowded, causing the burials to become shallower and the graveyards to be considered as unsanitary health hazards. Added to this was the massive increase in the population, particularly in the expanding urban industrial areas, which increased the demand for burial space. The situation was further exacerbated by the increased death rate during periodic epidemics such as cholera, occurring unchecked within these overcrowded urban environments. These burial problems were resolved with the development of ‘public cemeteries for all’. This was initially not under the direction of local or central government, but under Joint Stock Companies for profit. For example, Key Hill Cemetery in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, founded in 1834, was a local example of such a Joint Stock venture. However, these efforts by private enterprise could not, by themselves, solve the overall problem, and as a direct result of the cholera epidemics of 1831-1832 and 1848-1849 central government had to take action. Between 1852 and 1857 a series of Burial Acts were passed, which established a national system of public cemeteries under the direction of local Burial Boards. These Boards were responsible for the interment of the dead; could build and manage new cemeteries; and, charge the expenses to the Poor Rate.

Brilliant cemetery well kept a team goes around to clean it most weeks they are legend our dear friend Valerie wood who passed in 2000 is there lovely old war graves and has a lot of history connected to it no car parking toilets in church or outside disabled access however the paths are very uneven take care Brilliant
Those complaining about locking up at 4pm during the winter, it’s a safety issue as well as the practicality of ensuring visitors are out when staff leave at 4:30. The cemetery is dark from around 4:10 and so anyone on later would be walking around in the dark. With regards to dogs and opening times, dog owners allow their dogs to poop within the grounds which is clearly disrespectful in a cemetery, as well as placing droppings in the bins which staff have to empty by hand. As for opening times, the cemetery is officially open from 8:30am. In the even if an accident prior to this time, staff may not be available to assist.
A beautiful cemetery, with older graves at the very far side surrounded by trees which make for a nice, quiet, interesting walk. Also has a couple of war graves too, and two war memorials. However, I don't understand why it closes at 4pm during the winter instead of 4:30 or even 5pm. 4:30 would allow those kids who walk home from school to take a much shorter, safer route back, and that added half an hour can make a real difference. There have also been times where the gate has been opened later than 830am which makes kids late for school for being forced to take the long way at the last minute. I also don't understand why they don't allow dogs to walk through sticking to the main path, but then I'm from a city where this is fairly common so my view might be slightly skewed. Nevertheless, a well kept, peaceful place with friendly staff and a lovely walk.
No problems here. I have been visiting over45years and COVID aside visit multiple times every year in all weathers and find it a tranquil setting to reflect and remember loved ones. Graves are maintained and grass is cut regularly. Overall I cannot complain.
Trees were cut down very late this year. Beautiful cemetery but not as well kept as it used to be.
