Bolton Town Hall

Story

Bolton Town Hall facing Victoria Square in Bolton, Greater Manchester, England, was built between 1866 and 1873 for the County Borough of Bolton to designs by William Hill of Leeds and George Woodhouse of Bolton. The town hall was extended in the 1930s to the designs of Bradshaw, Gass and Hope and has been designated a Grade II* listed building by English Heritage.BackgroundThe town hall was promoted by the mayor, J.R. Wolfendon, in the early 1860s. The cost was expected to be between £70000 and £80,000 but more than doubled to £167,000, equivalent to £ in. Bolton Corporation held a competition for a new town hall design in the 1860s. It was won by a pupil of Cuthbert Brodrick, architect William Hill from Leeds whose design was very similar to that of the 1858 Leeds Town Hall. It was opened in June 1873 by Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. Portsmouth Guildhall, also designed by Hill in 1890, is a similar, slightly larger copy of the town hall.In the early 1930s the town hall was extended and a crescent of civic buildings was built to the rear on a new street to provide office space. The extension matches the Victorian building externally, but is plain inside and contains offices. In 1978 Fred Dibnah made repairs to the clock tower and its 16 stone pillars. Whilst repairing the tower he gilded the sphere at the top.

I am proud to say that I am fromnBolton when I meet people and the town hall is always such a fantastic centre piece to the town
Terrible service. No one cares one lady called Kate Ingham told me she doesn't even like to work for Bolton council. She keeps making me appointment's and doesn't even bother to turn up. Kate Ingram also told me I'm just not a priority as I'm not pregnant or black I suggest you go back to your tent. She also said have you ever thought about taking drugs and reaping the benefits. Smoke a pipe get it in your system and go to the doctor and then you will get everything. She does nothing but take a wage. I also had to eat out of bins because she wouldn't sign a peace of paper for 3 months, I took a massive overdose because of her. She takes pleasure in watching people suffer like a cat with a mouse and does it all with a smirk on her face
I visited this place for a quick coffee and walk around on a sunny day.nnI must say this is Quite impressive civic buildings. The library with a hidden gem included. A freshwater fish aquarium with species from all over the world that opened in the early 1940's.nnStill closed due to renovation going on which are delayed due to Covid lockdown situation.
