Blists Hill Victorian Town

Story

Blists Hill is an open-air museum, one of ten museums operated by the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, built on a former industrial complex located in the Madeley area of Telford, Shropshire, England. The museum attempts to recreate the sights, sounds and smells of a Victorian Shropshire town in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.History of the siteIn the 18th and 19th centuries, Blists Hill was an industrial region consisting of a brick and tile works, blast furnaces and coal, iron and fire clay mines operated by the Madeley Wood Company. A short section of the Shropshire Canal ran across the site to the Hay Inclined Plane, which transported boats up and down the 207ft tall incline from Blists Hill to Coalport.Open-air museumIntroductionBlists Hill Victorian Town, originally called Blists Hill Open Air Museum, was opened in 1973, and has been slowly growing ever since. The museum's buildings fall into one of three categories: buildings that were already part of the industrial site (e.g. the brickworks); buildings that simply represent a generic type (e.g. the sweet shop), some adaptively reusing existing premises on site or being replicas of those still standing elsewhere; and original buildings that have been relocated to the museum (e.g. The New Inn public house, which originally stood between Green Lane and Hospital Street in Walsall).

Really wonderful day here, we thought it would only be a couple of hours however we spent 4h here and enjoyed every moment. Great food for lunch, with a special for October where you get a kids meal for free for each adult meal you order, great value! They had a computer issue at the time of entry to had a short wait but even then they did well to revert to manual operations and clear the minor queue. Highly recommended day out
What a great day out. Do wrap up warm if going this winter as we had some snow. Walk through the village and have a ride in the horse and cart. You have to try the & chips cooked in beef fat these are to die for. Get there early and visit the bakery for fresh bread and cakes. Go and visit the fair and Punch & Judy in the big top, it's great for adults and children.
Wow what two days. We got there for an early morning visit. Then found out we would have to use the lift for my wife's scooter only I forgot she does not like lift's. So out again up a steep incline and the batteries go completely dead. So have to pack up and go find some batteries. Too expensive. so try the next day on another scooter good job we bought two. But anyway the day turned out to be absolutely great. From being met by the on duty policeman who wanted me to buy a licence for our dog which I did. to all the staff on duty and in the shops who helped my wife on her Scooter a BIG thank you. The site is very clean and tidy quite spread out and steep in one place. Don't be frightened to ask any questions you have or just talk to staff they love it. And do change your money the younger kids love it and you can change it back at the end. The disabled parking bays are next to the entrance and the queue of people seem to queue behind the cars instead of on the paths???.
We love coming here. There is plenty to see and do. Make sure you get your old money from the back first before going into the shop just makes it more fun. You can then change the money back. The staff are really helpful and are happy to talk with you about the times. You can get fresh baked breads etc and Fish and Chips then a pint in the pub. It is just great.
Great day out at this recreated Victorian town. Plenty of shops and businesses to visit, all created in their original 19th century style. Many are staffed by very informative and helpful staff dressed in the costumes of the period. Two cafes on site for a range of food and drink. Great place to take kids in the summer holidays.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Fantastic day out for the whole family. If you bring a pram, just make sure the wheels can take a bit of rough-ish terrain. Everyone we interacted with throughout our visit was friendly and very knowledgeable. The fish and chips were delicious and sweets shop had lots of really interesting variety. I'm now hooked on mint imperials after trying them there! highly recommend
This is a fantastic family day out. The staff are in Victorian dress and very informative and helpful. There are about nine museums in and around the area but you could spend a full day just in the Victorian town. A yearly pass is a cheaper option and of course you can come back as many times as you wish within the year.
One of my favourite places to go. You can forget about life and slip back in to days gone by for a little while. We have been many times before, but on this particular visit we went for one of the Christmas themed days. It actually snowed and the whole experience was completely magical.
A great family day out. Similar to the Black country museum. Some very interesting facts and an insight on what it was like to work making iron. You can spend tickets on a fairground or horse and cart ride. Lots of old shops to look around and a pub. Quite expensive, so would be better off buying a yearly pass to go to any museums. Parking: They shouldn't make us pay for parking.
Loved it, beautiful place to visit worth the money. Interesting things to see from the Victorian times and the staff very welcoming. It's a mustVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
