Story

Bishop Auckland Hospital is a small NHS district general hospital serving the western part of County Durham, with a primarily rural catchment area centred on the Wear Valley. It was opened in 2002 and then had around 286 beds, but this number has since been cut substantially. There has been much controversy over the recent 'decline of services' in this hospital. The hospital is part of the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust. The issue which made much controversy was the loss of the special care baby unit (SCBU) Special care babies are now cared for at Darlington Memorial Hospital, Ward 3 (Haematology) was also closed down, and surgical beds were greatly cut, so that now only relatively minor surgical procedures are carried out at the hospital. The overall quality and use of services in the trust (County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust) was rated as 'Good' by the HealthCare Commission Ratings. The other two main sites in the trust are Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. In June 2009, it was announced that the hospital's children's ward will close from 1 July 2009, with all services transferred to Darlington and Durham, a decision that was attacked by campaigners against the hospital's downgrading, but defended by NHS management on the basis of paediatric specialists being "spread too thin".

As an ambulance care assistant, I've delivered patients to many hospitals across the county. Bishop Auckland Hospital truly stands out for its excellent staff and overall patient care.nThe paramedics and I are always impressed by the hospital's efficient A&E department. The staff is professional, attentive, and works seamlessly to get patients the treatment they need quickly.nFrom my perspective, it's clear that the hospital prioritizes creating a positive experience for both patients and healthcare providers.
Husband had full knee replacement surgery. Everybody from surgeon to nurses were amazing. He had 3 days on ward 18 and he couldn’t praise them all highly enough
Appointment arranged by 111 for urgent care for damaged shoulder. Attended urgent care, excellent friendly and helpful staff. Very friendly but thorough examination by Caroline and Lindsey, all necessary X-rays tests etc, brilliant, happy customer, thanks, the system works.
I attended today for a bowel cancer screening colonoscopy, the staff on ward 20 were outstanding, professional and very kind. The procedure team were caring and of course there are nerves before such a procedure , but everything is explained and the procedure went without any issue. If you are offered such a procedure don’t hesitate it might be a hour that prevents more serious issues.
A big shout out for all the staff within ward 18.... you are all amazing. Having just had knee replacement surgery I can not thank the staff enough for everything they do. Always willing to help, despite being so busy, caring and attentive. It's an eye opener when you see NHS in person, it's a wonderful thing that needs to nurture it's staff and encourage others to become part of NHS to ensure that they can deliver a brilliant service to us all. Thank you for your patience, your care, your dedication, you should all be proud of yourselves. I'll never forget my stay with you, twice in 6 months each time was amazing.
