Story

Bishop Auckland Hospital is a small NHS district general hospital serving the western part of County Durham, with a primarily rural catchment area centred on the Wear Valley. It was opened in 2002 and then had around 286 beds, but this number has since been cut substantially. There has been much controversy over the recent 'decline of services' in this hospital. The hospital is part of the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust. The issue which made much controversy was the loss of the special care baby unit (SCBU) Special care babies are now cared for at Darlington Memorial Hospital, Ward 3 (Haematology) was also closed down, and surgical beds were greatly cut, so that now only relatively minor surgical procedures are carried out at the hospital. The overall quality and use of services in the trust (County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust) was rated as 'Good' by the HealthCare Commission Ratings. The other two main sites in the trust are Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham. In June 2009, it was announced that the hospital's children's ward will close from 1 July 2009, with all services transferred to Darlington and Durham, a decision that was attacked by campaigners against the hospital's downgrading, but defended by NHS management on the basis of paediatric specialists being "spread too thin".

As an ambulance care assistant, I've delivered patients to many hospitals across the county. Bishop Auckland Hospital truly stands out for its excellent staff and overall patient care.nThe paramedics and I are always impressed by the hospital's efficient A&E department. The staff is professional, attentive, and works seamlessly to get patients the treatment they need quickly.nFrom my perspective, it's clear that the hospital prioritizes creating a positive experience for both patients and healthcare providers.
I have just spent a couple of days on ward 18 having a hip replacement and I cannot find enough words of praise for every member of staff there. The nurses were busy all of the time and always cheerful , compassionate and positive. That goes for the physios and ancillary staff too. The theatre staff and surgeons took the fear out of the occasion and I wondered what I had been worried about. They all deserve medals for the hard work they do and their compassion.
TKR carried out. Stayed in Ward 18 where the staff were beyond exceptional. Everyone made my stay as comfortable as they could. Couldn’t fault the care and attention afforded to me in any way. Thank you.
Outstanding care during my visit for hand surgery .nA lovely greeting on arrival . The staff were friendly , knowledgeable and caring . They go that extra mile .nThe consultant , anaesthetist and theatre staff amazing .nI am usually fearful of hospitals and needles … but not this time .
Parking at Bishop Auckland Hospital is inadequate for the volume of patients. Many bays are occupied by skips, lorries, and workmen's vehicles. It took me 40 minutes to find a spot. When I arrived at the clinic, I was informed that it was running 40 minutes late, which was quite frustrating. However, on a positive note, the receptionist was friendly this time, which is a rare experience.
