Story

Perched on the edge of Pilgrim Street, Bierrex has been firing out “low and slow” barbecue since 2014. Off the beaten path and in sight of the iconic Tyne Bridge, our smokehouse pairs 25 taps of craft beers with our extensive menu of classic barbecue.

Good barbecue starts at the very beginning. That’s why when we select our meats, we look no further than Peter Hannan for our supply. World Steak Challenge Gold Winner and Great Taste Supreme Champion, Peter Hannan provides a range of succulent, carefully reared Glenarm Shorthorn Beef for our ribs and steaks. Between ripping rivulets of succulent sugar pit short rib and shovelling slices of tender brisket into your mouth, you’ll know why we’re one of the longest established BBQ joints in Newcastle.

We’re open 12.00pm, to 12.00am (and 2.am on the weekends), so if it’s a quick half at lunch, a pint after work, or a few rounds with dinner and friends; Bierrex boasts an extensive range of beers. From the weird to the wonderful, we stock a couple of crammed A4 sheets of cans and bottles - to a long list of incredible draught beers. We provide an ever changing menu from our friends in the big smoke at Pressure Drop and Beavertown, barrels bursting with flavour from Bristol’s Wiper and True, local icons like Northern Alchemy and collaborations with the infamous Summer Wine brewery. Whether it’s a deep south inspired Lager, a Sour lambic, or a classic Ale, you don’t have to be a Beer sommelier to enjoy our incredible range.

Deep in the depths of Bierrex, there is a dark secret. The Poison Cabinet. A small wooden door bound in iron. Only those that dare venture in will reap the benefits. Will you be tempted?

It was Thursday, we found 30 different types of beer of different nationalities of our choice, free delicious meaty canapés with a couple of drinks on weekly days and really nice reggae music. They serve other alcoholic drinks as well. What else?
Bierrex itself is a perfectly passable Craft Beer/BBQ joint. The food and drink selection is decent but there's loads of other places in town that are as good or better. It's on a weekend though this place comes into its own. Head down to the basement, open the door marked 'libations' and prepare to travel through time. That's all I'm saying ;
It's gone downhill badly in recent months. God only knows who thought green cling film on the windows was a good idea! Pretty much inedible burger the other night, which I had to send back, and floury undercooked mac and cheese. I seriously couldn't recommend it any more.
Great food, excellent selection of well kept beer and kid friendly my little one said it was the best burger and fries she had ever had
A great place for beer and cocktails. Huge selection available and reasonably priced. Go downstairs for the ultimate cocktail bar!
We were wandering the streets trying to find somewhere to eat and luckily ended up here. Even though we were pretty late they found us a table. They have a choice of around twenty beers and the food is great and very good value. Nice that it's family run and not a chain. Very impressed.
Great atmosphere, nice feel to the place with a touch of vintage decor. I like the setup with the numbered beers on tap, and loads to choose from. We just went for beers, and had some excellent craft brews. They change the beers regularly so you can be sure to find something interesting here.
Was looking forward to trying this place for food after having already tried it for the great range of drinks. The staff were great with a last-minute booking of a decent sized group. Had the beef ribs which were HUGE, some grilled corn on the cob, and some sweet potato fries. Received sweet potato crisps instead. Confused. I'd go back and try more, but I'd have to get over the emotional turmoil of expecting sweet potato fries and getting crisps instead. Might take some time.
From the outside it looked like a cafe. Inside it has loads of character. A large room that wrapped around a central bar. Seating was in booths for 4-6 people. There was also a separate dining area. The cocktails were original and really good. The place had lots of atmosphere and the music was excellent. We stumbled across the venue but would strongly recommend it to others. Will definately be going back the best time we are in Newcastle.
Great burgers! Bafflingly small plates for an actually good size burger... Like fer real why was there no chip space and my burger was messy! Man's needs room to spread and expand and party with his meat. Not great cider but that's definitely not their fault... It's a beer place. On the plus side. Plenty of beer choice!
