It's a nice place for walking around. There are a couple of birdhides that you can watch the birds but you are limited to the trails and you can rarely see the ponds when you're walking.
This large area is still in course of restoration and only the western side is open to the public via a footpath which starts in the north west corner of Beddington Park and ends at Mitcham Junction you need to cross a bridge over the railway to get there. There are some hides by the lakes for nature observation.
This nature area which looks quite large, but the public area seemed to just go around the outside. It has some wetlands with ducks and geese and has hides to help you view them. However, the path leading up to the hide I visited had thick noisy gravel on it the main path wasn't gravel, which seemed to defeat the purpose of a hide where you should be quiet!
Maybe I went in with to high expectations but I was disappointed to say the least, I understand the site is still a work in progress but the map on the website makes it look like there's already a large area to walk around when in reality there's a path down one side of the South lake that has a very lackluster hide. The whole walk will take you maybe ten to fifteen minutes if you go slowly and as for the hide....who made the choice to have such a noisy sounding material as the path to the hide and the floor in the hide. The aim of a hide is to see the wildlife without disturbing it not to scare it away as you walk up to the hide.
This is a very special place. Part working sewage farm, part landfill site but mainly a haven for a whole variety of birds, some who are breeding on the site.
When finished and combined with Beddington Park to the south and Mitcham Common to the north, this will be one of the most significant green space developments in London in the last 50 years. A huge number of different species of waterfowl and other wildlife inhabit the area, and the greater park will soon be fully accessible 2023-.
Great for a quiet walk. However the bird viewing huts need a bit of live and care, several times been have been full runbish over flowing. Seeing as this is so close to wild life maybe should be in sealed bins?
Very nice urban nature reserve.
When this place is complete, it’s gonna be awesome. Great trails for running, walking or biking! Good 2-3mile length.
Nice place for a walk and take in a bit of bird watching, so be sure to take your binoculars.
