Avon Valley Railway

About

The Avon Valley Railway is more than just a train ride, offering a whole new experience for some or a nostalgic memory for others. It's a real treat for the whole family!

Mission

The aim of the Avon Valley Railway Heritage Trust is to restore, preserve and operate railway locomotives, carriages, wagons, vehicles and other artefacts of historical interest and the structures connected therewith for the benefit and education of the public; to conserve books, drawings, records, documents, sound and visual recordings, cinematography films and photographs and other archives relating to such objects, their history and their development.

All this should be for the public benefit, for educational and instructional purposes, and to stimulate and encourage interest in all kinds of railway transport systems, vehicles and equipment and to foster and support railway preservation.

In pursuit of this object the aim is to relay and operate as much as possible of the former LMS Mangotsfield to Bath branch railway, based upon Bitton Station. In doing so, to provide additional recreation, leisure and tourist amenities and to provide worthwhile spare time activities for a wide range of ages.

There were no trains running the day we were in the area so we thought it would be nice to have a bit of lunch on in an old railway carriage. Whilst the carriage dining area was quite nice it is a shame the service and the food was not as good , my wife ordered a sausage and egg bap and I had sausage and chips, when it did eventually arrive after our tea had gone cold , the bap was served on a paper plate that was flopping all over as the waitress carried it and the egg inside looked as it was fried to death the yolk was rock hard , whilst my meal was served on pottery I cannot for the life of me why chips where served in a bowl with 2 sausages perched on the top ,how on earth was I supposed to properly cut up the sausages whilst on top of the chips , what is wrong with providing a plate it still has to be washed up after like a bowl but it is a lot better for an adult to eat from , Unless they cut up the sausages for you like my mother did for me 60 years ago , its not rocket science but it seems beyond a lot of people these days

Lovely place for a family day out. Put your phones away and have some proper fun with steam trains, cycling, lashings of ginger beer and a slice of Victoria Sponge! Perfect

Really good catering on a day with no trains. Really easy parking and a good atmosphere. Fair prices. Recommended.

As steam railways go, this is a small one at 3 miles of track. Now, don't get me wrong, I love steam railways but this one suffers because you have to join it in the middle with the result being that there is a lot of waiting for the engine to decouple and recouple at the ends of the track and not enough uninterrupted travel.
