I asked for advice as a first-time fish owner. The shop assistant seemed very helpful at the time, helping me to choose a tank and my daughter to choose three beautiful fantails. I was surprised that he said I could use untreated tap-water as long as I left it for a few hours before putting the fish in but took him at his word. Sadly this was all wrong and all three fish which I'd been sold died within a few weeks. Sad for the fish and sad for my daughter as they were her first ever pets. I've since found out from Pets at Home that fantails are inappropriate for the small size of tank; that tap water needs to be treated and then left for a whole week after adding any ornaments or gravel and before putting any fish in; that live plants are a good idea for the fish to nibble on; and that fish should ideally be added gradually one by one. This is the first time that I've left a negative review and I hope that other potential fish owners will be given better advice.
