I bought my girlfriend an hour trial flight in a Cessna 152, which she carried out today very successfully! She absolutely loved it and wants to give big thanks to her instructor Norman for making her flight so relaxed & fun, she wants to do it all over again! All of the staff at Andrewsfield were very friendly. Her instructor Norman was very nice, thorough & professional. A green, rural setting with a nice bar/cafe on site cash only, where you can sit in or outdoors, watching the aircraft come & go. Thanks to Norman & all the staff at Andrewsfield for making this day really special for Jo.
Andrew is a fantastic teacher. His flexible approach put me at ease when he assessed my RT practical after I was struggling a little. Very knowledgable and gave a lot of practical advise with regards to safety and real world use of CAP413. Andrew created his own training content with slides including voice recordings of RT exchanges to help you elaborate short hand writing skills. His office is equipped with all the toys and screens set in a peaceful area near the cheddar gorge. Worth the drive from Colchester and I’ll be back for any other training needs. Kind regards, Rob
I’ve just got home after a 1 hour trial flying lesson in a 2-seater Cessna with Andrewsfield Aviation. The whole experience was fantastic and Norman who normally flies 747s was a great instructor. He took off and landed but most of the time I had the controls! We flew to Colchester, flew around a few of the sights including the zoo, uni and barracks and then flew back. I had such a great time and then had a delicious lunch with my family from their bar, enjoyed outside in the sunshine. Highly recommended! Cash only bar so remember to bring some money!
It was the first world War II us airbase in the uk
Good place to watch the light aircraft coming and going while enjoying Elevenses during a cycle ride. Comfortable indoors and picnic tables outside.
A lovely place for lunch, great food and cheap! Thanks, Dan
Very friendly staff, very nice bar. Love to watch the planes.
Lovely airfield & a good breakfast stop with quick sevice & friendly staff.
CAA Rated Aerodrome with Important Historical Interest. The First US Aerodrome constructed in the UK by American Troops in WWII. The Aerodrome was named after General Frank M. Andrews of the US Airforce commissioned in the summer of 1943 troops from the 819th Engineer Aviation Battalion of the United States Army arriving in July 1942 to commence work on Heavy Bombardment Stations in the UK, this one at Saling became the first one to be built for the United States Air Force and which made this Aerodrome the First Front Line Aerodrome for the United States Eighth Air Force in the UK. The Ninth Airforce and RAF Fighter Command also operated from this aerodrome. I visited Andrewsfield aerodrome on Sunday and discovered that the modern grass runway that is used is part of the original wartime runway; there is a before and after plan in the back inside seating area inside the cafe that shows this and it is really encouraging to see. Both the original T2 hangars still remain in the distance. This modern day aerodrome gives flight training from the basic pleasure flights to the PPL right up to the CPL and commercial airline training, clearly this aerodrome is as important to aviation now as it was back in wartime. My personal score for Andrewsfield is 10/10 and I Award this Aerodrome my Gold Star for Excellence. Andrewsfield kindly permitted me exclusive rights for my photos used in this review.
