A German husband and wife team run this restaurant, with Angela performing front of house duties with German efficiency and mixing it with friendly Scottish-like banter. We were lucky to get a table since we turned up early evening at the very start of the season (Easter weekend). If you intend to visit any you'd be well advised to book ahead. What's great about this place is that the first few pages of the menu tell you about where all the food has been sourced from and the distance involved - mostly from the island itself. As for the food itself, I would quite happily visit every night and work my way through the choices on offer. Limited to the last evening of our holiday I opted for scallops to start, hake for my main, and pannacotta for dessert (this last one was bit too firm to pass the wobble test though). My partner had the seafood stew, a lamb loin (a special), and sticky toffee pudding. All to die for!

Love the design of the building and the detailed information about the producers and food miles. Not cheap by any means, but quality food, so worth the money.

In our 2 weeks in Mull, unbelievably, we only went out once (views from house were too good). So only went out once and had a lovely meal at Am Birlinn. Great mix of fresh local seafood in a great restaurant.

Great food, friendly service. Wide selection of seafood dishes and wines. Only drawback is location...it is in a very remote location so you will need a car

We were driving past and decided to stop for lunch, the board outside said reservations advised but there was only 3 cars in the car park so we thought they could accommodate us and so they could. A light airy restaurant with tiled floor and lots of windows looking onto the surrounding trees. There were only 2 other couples inside and we were quickly seated and served our drinks. I decided to have a starter of soup of the day which was leek and potato, my wife chose a smoked trout with cream cheese and cucumber ciabatta from the lunch menu. The soup was very tasty and came with a couple of slices of what tasted like homemade bread which was excellent. My wife said her ciabatta was really good and I could tell because she finished it all. For a main I chose Spanish seafood stew and I'm so glad I did, heaven in a bowl. Salmon, scallop, chorizo, courgette, aubergine and langoustine in a tomato and smokey paprika broth and there was plenty of it. With bread also available I would say if you're hungry, go for it. After that I couldn't find space for dessert but my wife went for cheesecake with raspberry coolie, it was a huge portion and it too was completely finished. In conclusion, if we're ever back on Mull then we will certainly return to the Am Birlinn, best food we had on the island.
