Really nice old-school building with great decor, and a maze of corridors and passageways inside which never stop being easy to lose yourself in! The only unpleasant thing about my experience when I studied here was the creepy presence of a weird Psychology “research assistant” called Sharon who seemed more interested in harassing myself and others than studying Psychology - which wasn’t exactly the building’s fault! I eventually reported her and that seemed to put a stop to it. All in all, a nice place with a great atmosphere!
Beautiful historical university and Securi-Tay was a very well organised event, absolutely loved it.
Not sure if students from other universities can use the scunnel pass or not. The library arrangements in Scotland seems to have had a slow response.
A very poorly organised event. I left feeling my time was wasted travelling to Abertay. I would rather my child attend a competent university as I have no confidence in this Abertay. Based on their performance today.
At Abertay you're not just a number. The univerity is small but you can only benefit from that as you feel very much at home there. The student support is amazing, the lecturers are dedicated to their subject which you can feel in each lecture Psychology. I was very happy at Abertay.
First time, knew my way around.
A great year of studies, library have great selection of game dev books.
Definitely don't enroll in psychology at either under or postgraduate unless you enjoy being belittled and bullied, or happy to nod and agree to everything the lecturers dictate. Great lecturers in the sociology department, passionate about what they do and very approachable and always show an interest in each of us in class. I left due to medical issues and enrolled again, happily welcomed back to begin my final year again in Sociology. Loved my final year and after graduating, my old supervisor got me my current lecturing position as he knew I was keen to get into teaching and had received an email asking if he knew interested students. It was nice he remembered me and contacted me with details. Psychology hated this and on more than one occasion told me I wasn't allowed and shouldn't be teaching and had to choose the MSc or the job. I did both. There were lots of research opportunities throughout the year in the Social Science department run by the sociology department that I was apart of and got me the research experience I needed for my current job and future postgraduate prospects. Student services were great before Sarah left for maternity leave. They had been fantastic with my application for childcare and also for my DSA application for studying equipment I didn't know I could apply for. Some members of staff are not approachable and like to take the piss out of you when you're in dire need of help. I had a young student who was covering maternity leave who made me cry and I had to run out the room when I was asking for money for food for me and my 3 year old son as my benefits hadn't been paid - she put in a complaint about me that went to the highest stage immediately not protocol where she said I was verbally abusive and she feared for her safety when I opened the door that accidentally hit a cabinet. I was then shouted at and literally chased up the stairs. I ended up going to the council for food vouchers. The library facilities have improved since I was last enrolled 3 years ago. Lots of books are now accessible online so there's much more room for studying at PCs and with your own laptop. Class sizes are small which I really like because it helps with support as lecturers can spend time with us in tutorials and lectorials. I have enjoyed every minute of my time at Abertay as an undergrad in sociology and hated every minute of my under- and postgrad in psychology. The lecturers didn't like that I came from sociology because they seem to think we're anti-psychology even though I spent half my degree doing psychology modules, even as electives. I only wish they offered sociology postgrads as I'd have liked to continue my studies with them because I got nothing out of the psych convergence course poorly and incorrectly advertised with no meaningful uses if psych is your academic route. It got so bad I made an official complaint due to constant battles with staff as class rep as they could only believe I was airing grievances as a personal vendetta and had to have counselling and hospital treatment because my mental health was affected so much. I've never received an apology. We had one lecturer every week tell us "I don't want to hear what sociology has to say, your sociology degree isn't worth the paper it's written on." Elena Rusconi and Ken Scott Brown were absolutely fantastic lecturers, and people in general. They made the course enjoyable for us. Definitely done my time there and hate how the uni is now business focused instead of student focused as it was before. There's no community atmosphere any more and it's so bad that our union is getting bought by Dundee Uni, even though Abertay keep denying this officially to us. We knew about it from Dundee themselves at student meetings and they had no idea we didn't know. How a central building like that has no students in it is unbelievable; what's the business school there for?!
Attempts to restrict free speech and debate by forcing students to conform to a certain ideological view point. Appalling behaviour from an institution that should be supporting free speech and expression and not investigating students who dare to have an opinion, a factual one at that, which doesn’t ally itself with the beliefs of a very small minority of people.
Gr8t University and excellent student support services. I studied MSc Energy, Water and Environmental management and loved every bit of it. Field trips, Lab work, developing solutions for companies + lots o independent research work........u name it. I must confess, the library 3rd floor and the new graduate school are excellent places I recommend for 100% concentration and comfort.
