While walking these steps, you can see the coast of Whitby and it provides a viewpoint to see far away. Follow these steps all the way up to St Mary's Church and further up to the Abbey and walk the hill for a short coastal hike
We recently visited the 199 Steps in Whitby after not visiting since 2013. The steps themselves are steep and can be a bit of a challenge, but they offer a fantastic opportunity to work off some of the indulgent treats Whitby is known for! The climb takes you up to the Church of St. Mary’s and provides stunning views of the town and the coastline.nnThe steps are an iconic part of Whitby’s history and are often associated with Bram Stoker’s Dracula, which adds an eerie, atmospheric charm to the climb. We enjoyed the sense of accomplishment when we reached the top, and the views made it well worth the effort.nnIt’s a great spot for photos and a bit of local history, and while it may be a bit strenuous for those with mobility issues, the experience is something I’d highly recommend for anyone visiting Whitby. Just be sure to take your time and enjoy the scenery as you go!
The famous 199 steps leading to St Mary's Church. It gives your legs a good workout! If you need a rest there is benches you can sit on which the pall bearers used to rest the coffins on.
Whitby is a delightful little seaside village and the wander up the 199 Steps was well worth it.nnWe started out by crossing the Whitby swing bridge and wandering along Church street where you will see some beautiful shops.nnFrom there it is a quick trip up Church Lane to the 199 Steps where you will enjoy a beautiful view across Whitby. We walked up to Whitby Abbey before wending our way back down for a feed of Fish and Chips. Be warned - the Seagulls will fight you for your fish and chips. LITERALLY fight you and they are huge!!! Eat indoors.
Must see iconic landmark. It can often be very busy and is not suitable for wheelchairs or scooters; however the Abbey can be accessed from the other side, through the car park. It is enjoyable to hear people counting the steps. The steps are marked in Roman numerals; I think every 10 steps. The view from the top is worth it.
