Story

Yr Hen Dderwen is named after Merlin's Old Oak that used to grow in Priory Street.

Carmarthen is said to be the birthplace of Merlin (Myrddin). The prophecy states that when Merlin's Oak shall tumble down, then shall fall Carmarthen Town.

In the early 19th Century, a local man appears to have poisoned the tree. The last fragment of the tree was removed in 1978 and Carmarthen is still standing strong.

Called at Yr Hen Dderwen The Old Oak Treefor breakfast for four mornings. The decor is very nice upstairs. Ground floor has plenty of seating. The whole pub was clean and tidy. Has toilet upstairs and ground floor. Recommended if you are in Carmarthen.
We had been looking for hours for a place to eat, so eventually decided on a Wetherspoons, not expecting anything great. My expectations were wrong, as it was friendlier than a typical pub, and had the standard cheap Wetherspoons prices. The food provided, whilst not particularly fast, was surprisingly good, surpassed all expectations. The Mixed Grill was amazing, cooked authentically on a griddle, and the meat was high quality, not dry or tough. Would recommend for anyone visiting Carmarthen, as Drinks were also cheaper than any Modern Pub, so a great place to go no matter what you go for.
Stopped in for lunch. Service was good especially as it was busy. Enjoyed the meal. I had a jacket potato with cheese and coleslaw. I would pop back into this spoons if in the area.
A busy Saturday as usual, and as usual, not enough staff to serve. Waited over an hour for food, finally left with a refund pending 3-5 working days for the food that we never received.nPlates stacked up on tables by all customers just to find a seat as the staff have no time to clear them although I'm sure when they go to the tables delivering drinks, they could take a few plates back with them.nMany people left the bar after waiting over 15 minutes to be served at the bar for just drinks.nnFor a busy pub, they may need to re look at staffing and the way they operate
Waited an hour for food to come and they brought the wrong order. I wouldn’t care so much but I was out with someone with special needs and diabetes. Just not acceptable. The bar/waiting staff are great just rushed off their feet. I advise the staff to just leave and get a job that actually pays you well and is less stressful. You clearly aren’t treated well or have else you wouldn’t be so short staffed.
