Yr Hen Dderwen

About

Yr Hen Dderwen is a local pub offering great value food and drink. We pride ourselves in serving traditional Welsh ale and quality food.

Story

Yr Hen Dderwen is named after Merlin's Old Oak that used to grow in Priory Street.

Carmarthen is said to be the birthplace of Merlin (Myrddin). The prophecy states that when Merlin's Oak shall tumble down, then shall fall Carmarthen Town.

In the early 19th Century, a local man appears to have poisoned the tree. The last fragment of the tree was removed in 1978 and Carmarthen is still standing strong.

We visited just over a week ago whilst staying in Carmarthen, on Friday evening.nService was fast after ordering on the app. Food was ok, perhaps slightly below the usual Wetherspoons standard. Staff seemed pleasant when bringing it over and a glass collector even asked us how our food was when passing. Slightly loud and lairy atmosphere, but it was getting towards 7.30pm when we left so that's to be expected. Toilets were ok for cleanliness.
Bit grubby & run down in my opinion. Massive disappointment as this was number 100 for us and we wanted it to be a special occasion. Had a glass of Prosecco to celebrate our hundredth Spoons which was nice. Not a pub we would rush back to. Carpets and seats looked tired. Didn't eat here so cant comment on the quality.
Ordered traditional breakfast. Plate stone cold. Beans stone cold - inedible. Hash browns - stone cold - inedible. Bacon - stone cold - stiff as cardboard - inedible. Egg overcooked but edible. Only hot element was sausage. Very disappointed.
Been coming in here anytime we are in the area. Man with the frizzy hair was SO HELPFUL when I couldn’t find any bottles of mayo and was so sweet to bring it to the table when it was super busy.
Called at Yr Hen Dderwen The Old Oak Treefor breakfast for four mornings. The decor is very nice upstairs. Ground floor has plenty of seating. The whole pub was clean and tidy. Has toilet upstairs and ground floor. Recommended if you are in Carmarthen.
