We were travelling around the Peak District and came across this gem! The atmosphere was lovely, walking in to a fire blazing in mid October. The staff were delightful and accommodating having been a walk in and them being very busy, they found a table for us. I had the lambs liver and bacon with mashed potato. The liver and bacon was delicious with a very generous portion of meat and I would happily come back again!
We have just visited the restaurant and pub . The atmosphere was lovely. We were greeted and looked after very well. We had a Greek platter and it was really good. I was so pleased that the salad was a true salad with feta, tomatoes, olives and salad leaves. Much better than the usual in other places, a plate of leaves with dome tomatoes.nWe will definitely visit again
A delightful pub in Castleton of my favourites places in the country. The pub is attractive outside and in and has a great range of real ales. The food we had was excellent and the bar lady was lovely and friendly. Can't wait to go back.
The book in the Airbnb we were staying at recommended this place. On checking their website you are required to pay a £5 per head cancellation fee on booking which is unusual but the impression that it was popular. We booked for a Sunday roast. On arrival we were 20 minutes early and we were asked to wait in the bar area for a while. I was surprised when we were shown through to the dining room that only three of the tables were occupied.nnWe both ordered the roast and 5 minutes later we were told there would be a 20 minute delay on the order. 45 minutes later, the young lad who was serving told us that the order had been lost and the chef was just starting our food! At this point, only two tables were occupied.nnThe food arrived 10 minutes later. I don’t know what the delay was for but it wasn’t for food to be cooked. The roast was lukewarm, the roast potatoes mushy and all of it had obviously been sat under a heat lamp or some sort of warmer for some time. I’ve had better at a Toby Carvery.nnA pub that deals with tourists most of the time but doesn’t rely on repeat business. Avoid. The other pubs in the high street all looked better.
Had a fantastic 24hrs stay in the Cheshire Cheese. Location was good, beer and food was great and the breakfast in the morning was fantastic and piping hot. The staff were excellent too, nothing was too much for them. If your staying in Castleton then I'd highly recommend the Cheshire Cheese
