Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese

Story

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese is a Grade II listed public house at 145 Fleet Street, on Wine Office Court, City of London. It is on the Campaign for Real Ale's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.AgeYe Olde Cheshire Cheese is one of a number of pubs in London to have been rebuilt shortly after the Great Fire of 1666. There has been a pub at this location since 1538. While there are several older pubs which have survived because they were beyond the reach of the fire, or like The Tipperary on the opposite side of Fleet Street because they were made of stone, this pub continues to attract interest due to the curious lack of natural lighting inside which generates its own gloomy charm. Some of the interior wood panelling is nineteenth century, some older, perhaps original. The vaulted cellars are thought to belong to a 13th-century Carmelite monastery which once occupied the site. The entrance to this pub is situated in a narrow alleyway and is very unassuming, yet once inside visitors will realise that the pub occupies a lot of floor space and has numerous bars and gloomy rooms. In winter, open fireplaces are used to keep the interior warm. In the bar room are posted plaques showing famous people who were regulars. The pub is currently owned and operated by the Samuel Smith Brewery.

We visited this pub by booking a small group for London Historical pub tour via Viator! Our guide Shadow was wonderful and knowledgeable about this bar and make sure you go down to the lower level of the pub to see the 13 century under ground pub! We ordered just one beer Dr Johnson Lagerfor my wife and I to enjoy, which we liked very much! Parking: Parking is not available.
This old pub has waited 355 years but I finally showed up. To think of the people through the ages who have had a pint here. If you didn't know the history you would probably give a miss. I enjoy dark historical pubs with a bit of flavour.Atmosphere: 5/5
One of the must see’s if you’re into old historical pubs! This pub dates back to the 1500’s but rebuilt around 1666 after the great fire of London. The entrance is down an alleyway which I did have to follow Google maps closely as you can easily miss it! Surprisingly very big inside but the ceilings are quite low down which I did bump my head once or twice! Lol. Reminders of the history are displayed with photos around the pub and it’s amazing how Charles Dickens, Mark Twain and Churchill use to stop here for a pint or two. Favourite part was downstairs in the cellar where there are seats and tables along with another bar, I believe the cellar is thought to have belonged to a 13th Century monastery which once occupied the site. Great choice of beers on draft too but correct me if I’m wrong you won’t find you’re Carling or Peroni here but Instead unique beers that could be local? Nice to try something different though! Love to come back again one day soon but for some food instead!
Place was very busy, we stopped in for a pint and every table was taken. We found room at a long communal table and went up to order a beer. It is a cool spot with lots of little rooms, it feels like a maze or a cave, but it was too busy for my liking and therefore very loud. We were not served, you have to go to the bar to order.Service: 3/5
If you’re from America and think your country has some old spots, wait until you visit this pub in London, originally built in 1667! Actually, the original structure predates that, but it was rebuilt after the Great Fire of London, and it’s been standing strong for 355 years. This place has been frequented by notable figures like Mark Twain and others. I highly recommend visiting—it’s truly amazing. Whether it’s a weekday or a chill Friday, this pub has an atmosphere that’s hard to put into words. Sitting in the cellar with a beer, surrounded by centuries of history, is a surreal experience. You can really take it all in and imagine what life must have been like back then. It’s an absolute must-visit on your next trip to London!
I visited the pub on Thursday. Ordered fish and chips and cheese. It wasn’t crowded at all. Beer was great. Waiter was rly friendly but service took longer than I expected. Fish and chips was huge and tasty. At some point I noticed they forgot to bring me my cheese. I asked a receipt and had waited for it half an hour. There’s definitely some space for improvement around service promptness
We loved drinking our pints in one of the coolest, oldest, most layered pubs we’ve ever been to. We ventured down several floors towards the cellar to enjoy our drinks. We visited around 4pm on a Sunday and found a lot of available space.
Really old pub, very low celling and stairwells which adds the atmosphere. Stepping back in time this place has a lot to offer, downstairs is worth a visit and got can feel the history of the place. It's a Samuel Smith pub and only servers thier drinks.Service: 4/5
The Classic olde British pub. Go down to the basement for a hand pulled pint. A bit bummed there wasn’t an old Englishman behind the bar. Looks like their food menu had improved side our last visit 7 years ago!Service: 4/5
Beautiful historical pub, best organic larger I've had in the UK. Great place to explore, full of books and crannies like all great old pubs. Not the cheapest pint and definitely full of bumbling American tourist groups who have seemingly never lined up or walked in foot traffic in their life! Well worth the visit if not nothing that the cellar bar, which I can only imagine must be a raucous time with a fire burning in the middle of winter. Would visit again!
