WWT Slimbridge

Story

WWT Slimbridge is a wetland wildlife reserve near Slimbridge in Gloucestershire, England. It is midway between Bristol and Gloucester on the eastern side of the estuary of the River Severn. The reserve, set up by the artist and naturalist Sir Peter Scott, opened in November 1946. Scott subsequently founded the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, which has since opened eight reserves around the country. Slimbridge comprises some of pasture, reed bed, lagoon and salt marsh. Many water birds live there all year round, and others are migrants on their ways to and from their summer breeding grounds. Other birds overwinter, including large numbers of white-fronted geese and increasing numbers of Bewick's swans.Besides having the world's largest collection of captive wildfowl, Slimbridge takes part in research and is involved in projects and internationally run captive breeding programmes. It was there that Peter Scott developed a method of recognising individual birds through their characteristics, after realising that the coloured patterns on the beaks of Bewick's swans were unique. The public can visit the reserve throughout the year. Besides examining the collections, they can view birds from hides and observatories and take part in educational activities.

This is a pushchair accessible place with LOTS of tame ducks. Loved the Welly Boot section: man made streams, a fountain... Just remember wellies, a change of dry clothes and a towel! Duck food is a bit pricey at £1.50 a bag and a life-size mallard duck toy is £12.50 (little mitts got hold of it and wouldn't let go!) I'd advise to get in early as car park was full when we left at 1pm.

A great day out especially if you have little kids. A lovely place to walk, feed the ducks with several play areas that never seem too crowded. Wwt does amazing conservation work and to can see lots of rare species here as well as spend time in the hides . Good cafe although they don’t serve hot food till 12

I've been a member for 20 years. Excellent for seeing the collection if occasional visitor. Kingfishers in Summer. Wild birding also good. Best in winter for wildfowl on north/west side at/towards Holden tower. You do need binoculars (and preferably telescope).

Absolutely a top day out for the whole family. Spent several hours there and still did not cover it all. The boys enjoyed hunting for Dusty's ducks around the site. Great finish in Wellieboot land where a fund time was had splashing around in the water. Otter talk also kept them interested.

We have planned to go to Slimbridge for several years, and finally we made it. The visit has left us with very mixed feelings. The place itself is split into two distinct halves. The worse half is a very poor attempt at a zoo, quite clearly to draw in hoards of kids and Mum and Dad who will pay helping to fill the coffers of the WWT.. The better half is the viewing areas allowing access to the wild birds and it has to be said that the funds generated from the aforementioned zoo undoubtedly helps in a lot of good work in this area. Overall, we had a good day, saw some very interesting and rare wild birds and accept that the close proximity to some of the "tame" birds was interesting. It is such as shame that Slimbridge, as with most other places, has to draw in large crowds to fund the work that they do, which rather puts off those who are actually interested in the subject in the longer term.
