Was once famous for its bad service but now changed. Waiters are polite and patient. Decor is still in its 80s and comfortable. Went in around 9pm after a day of pub crawling with friends. Cheap and filling dishes. Average £9 a dish. Fast and efficient service. Not your 5 star but good enough. Great atmosphere with locals and tourists. Cash only
Haven't been to Wong Kei for many years and the food was as good I remember although the waiters are no longer as hilariously abrupt or even rude as previously...I almost miss it. Anyway, we had a chicken sweetcorn soup, sweet and sour chicken with rice and if memory serves, beef in oyster sauce on rice. All dishes were very well cooked, delicious and arrived promptly. Although prices have increased since my last visit I did not feel hard done by and they were reasonable considering the portion size. The only thing missing was the entertaining rudeness of the waiters who seem to have moved up market probably losing some of the WK uniqueness in the process. But most people would probably prefer less abrupt serving staff. I can wholeheartedly recommend based on quality of the food, it's taste and the price. Decor is a little bland although this time we were seated downstairs. Free pots of green tea are always served and if you wish for another pot, just lift the lid and it will be swiftly replenished. Overall, highly recommended.
This place serves delicious, large portions of food! I had the chicken curry and we shared rice between two of us! The prices were a little higher and CAN ONLY PAY CASH! We had a great dining time although it wasn’t the cleanest or nicest interior but the food is the sole reason to dine here!
The mixed reviews sort of make sense but we loved it. Don’t go in there expecting super attentive service or gourmet food but you get an authentic experience - loads of great dishes, pretty good prices, and a bustling vibe. Definitely will be back! Cash only though
A very good experience. Food taste great, service was quick, staff were accommodating. Only downside, is they asked to pay with cash. But definitely recommend if you want good authentic Chinese food.
Delicious authentic Cantonese food with good price in Chinatown. The service was quick and efficient, the portions big with plenty of meat. Definitely will return. Accept cash only
I guess I was expecting to more Taiwanese or Cantonese flavor so I was a little bit disappointed. The Aromatic Duck was a little bit too dry but a quarter of a duck for 3.5 pounds is really a good deal. The Hot and Sour Soup was good with various ingredients in it and had many surprises when finding them out, but once again it was not the same taste as those in my memories. The Stewed Oysters had big a mount of green onions and made the sauce taste good although I didn’t quite enjoy the texture of the oysters. FYI, should mean you cook them when they are raw and alive and that was not the way they tasted like. BTW, if you come alone, you might need to expect they put other customers at your table.
Service is there to serve not to entertain, yet because of that rather "interesting" attitude this institution has some of the most fun atmosphere in China Town, food is authentic Chinese, solo dinning is an epic experienced, you stand in the doors they ask "how many" you say "one" they point at the chair, say "sit", if they know you "what you want" if not, you get the menu thrown at you, awesome. Also you get to sit next to and opposite random strangers. I met hundreds of incredibly interesting people's out there. Enjoy.
The duck was utterly disgusting , and the picture on the menu didn’t say wether it was cold or hot which they need to change so that customers know it will be cold rather than finding it on the menu. Before customers come in they should tell them that it’s cash only not when they have there food in front of him. But overall , the other food that was ordered was delicious but I would never come back here at all
Upstairs, downstairs!!!!!! I have been a returning customer for a long time. I had the won ton ho fun, and they always provide free tea. The food is really good, the prices went up a bit but it is still cheap and cheerful. I don’t expect any service in this restaurant, they are just there to guide you to the table upstairs/downstairs, take orders, dish out and take your plates back my plate was taken within 2 minutes and the bill came, they are too efficient . It is a quick turnaround for them, so the next customer comes in. Just remember to bring cash and they don’t add service charge in the bill.
