A Required Stop for Tolkien Fans - and a Beautiful, Peaceful Cemetery filled with History During my daytrip to Oxford from London, I took a short bus ride to Wolvercote Cemetery. Tip: Wolvercote is not a required stop for the buses, so be sure to press the "stop" button when you near the cemetery entrance so that the bus driver knows you intend to get off. Most tourists visit Wolvercote to see Tolkien author of The Lord of the Rings and his wife's gravesite. Markers along the cemetery entrance point the way to the grave, making it easy to find amidst hundreds of others. Seeing the humble grave with the famed "Beren & Luthien" engravings in person is inspiring. Fans leave occasional tokens at the grave, such as Elvish writing or small statues and notes. It's a moving sight to witness in person. The cemetery as a whole emanates a wondrous calm. It's quiet, vast, lush, and filled with history and peace there are tributes to Holocaust victims, for example. Trees large enough for ten people to hold hands around grow in some areas, with benches placed beneath them for relishing moments of silent contemplation. If you visit Wolvercote to see Tolkien's grave, plan to spend an hour just walking through the grounds and soaking everything in. You'll be struck with a humbling sense of being in the presence of the greats who have gone on before you.
RIP Tolkiens “Beren and Luthien”. I was sorry to hear that their grandchildren have funk into heathenry. The great Christopher Tolkien was cremated. Sad. That is a modernism.
JRR Tolkien and his wife Edith’s final resting place. The name engraved on their tombstone “Beren”- is a character from the Simarillion - Tolkien’s final story, left unfinished. The name engraved under his wife Edith’s name is “Luthien” -also from the same story -was an elf princess and Beren’s lover. Photo of Tolkien is the last photo taken by his son Michael before his death while he was at the Botanical Gardens in Oxford.
Most beautiful cemetery I have ever been to. But, honestly, since Tolkien is buried there, I'd rate it 7/5 even if it were all dirty and horrible.
Pretty quick bus ride from the main Oxford area and cost about 3.80 round trip. There are a bunch of signs to direct you to Tolkien's grave if you are looking for that.
Really peaceful place, there for Tolkien's grave but had a wonder around the different ethnic areas.
Very pretty, very peaceful - especially on a Summer's day. Took me 5 minutes to find Tolkien's grave as there are marked stones along the path pointing the way so look out for those. There's only parking for about 10 cars - along the road as soon as you drive in, but as I'm guessing it's usually quiet you should be OK if you choose to drive there. You drive around the small cemetery chapel to get back out.
As well as Tolkien being buried at this cemetery..our loved ones are there..my son Patrick, my stepson, my mum and dad and 2 lovely Uncles. Its a very special tranquil place.
Beautiful cementry, easy to get from Oxford centre. Number 2 bus stops right outside. Some people left a ring at Tolkiens grave. I wish had thought of that. Plenty of other beautiful Gravestones to see.
As sad as a cemetery is it has a warm and comforting feel.
