A great space for walking the dog and taking the kids. A decent play area and there is so a cafe open at certain times. Don't hold much hope if you need the toilets as I have rarely seen them open in years which is frustrating when you have children. Still a good place to visit as you have the hidden away river and small wooded area. It's all free to enter.
Lovely park, looked well maintained and great facilities. Especially liked the small garden in the pictures. Great venue for parkrun.
Free parking and very large park A lap walk is about 1.5 miles here. Great playground for kids and crazy golf. Cafe and toilets available too.
This is a huge site nestled behind Shotgate on the banks of the River Crouch. An avenue of remembrance for fallen Wickford soldiers, Café, children's play area, car park, cricket, football, woodland. There are few features to make it stand out yet the expanse of space in a heavily urbanised setting is welcome. Walk details... The Crouch is tidal so the water level changes... a lock at Battlesbridge also regulates water levels. You can walk almost to Battlesbridge on the south side of the river but a tributary cuts off a direct path and private land stops the public footpath. The walk has a pathway, but there is a lower river path which is muddy and has low trees. You pass through different fields until you reach a scrubland meadow with new tree plantings and an older wooded area known locally as 'Giddings Copse.' You aproach a three arched railway bridge which is very muddy, and can continue on the south side of the river as far as you can go, before having to retrace your steps back to the Memorial Park. On the opposite side of the river bank north, after the railway bridge, is Shotgate Thicket. I am told that the river can get low enough to cross over after the railway bridge... on today's walk the tide was high. I walked as far as we could on the south side and turned back to Wickford Memorial. I drove to Battlesbridge and found access to the river restricted by private dwellings and a fishery. To get onto the north bank, take a footpath near 'The Hawk' public house, which takes you up to a railway line crossing Wickford to Southminster. Walk alongside the railway line as it passes under the new A130, following the path to a sign post. The footpath sign points north but a gap in the hedge means you can walk south down a field track towards a 2nd world war pill box right at the bottom. If you squeeze around the pill box to the other side, you can continue following a wide track south, down the adjacent field to 'Shotgate Thickets' nature reserve which is a very poorly maintained site, with a couple of deep ponds listed on Essex Wildlife website. Go through the gate and follow the track around to the left, where it heads under the three arch railway bridge, and past a lagoon on your left. Continue up onto the flood defences and you can follow the river on the north side up to the A1245 bridge. Private land and a lot of fly tipping here forced me to turn back but you can see Battlesbridge Mill, now an antiques centre.
Lovely place for walks either with or without kids and dogs amongst the memorials. Playground: Fantastic little playground plenty to doo for all the family young and old. Restrooms: Toilets were in good order and clean, easily accessible for wheelchair users Dog-friendliness: Lots of dogs both on and off leads, young and older dog great mixture. Picnic area: Lots of family's having own group picnics, food available from café also at reasonable price
Fantastic playground for parents looking to occupy their children. Very dog friendly and safe due to fences and hedges to keep them contained. Plenty of places to sit and have a picnic with family.
Lovely spacious park with perimeter pathway. Several entrances and a couple of car parks. Large children's playground with ample seating for those with dear dogs or who want to watch the world go by. Lovely coffee shop with a good selection of hit and cold drinks and cake and snack options.
It was the first time I'd been in a few years. A nice play area to keep all the kids entertained. Sufficient seating, and also lots of space to sit on the grass out the way, still within the play area. Crazy golf course, and fields edged with trees for shade. Excellent place to go for all ages to go and enjoy some sunny weather. Also a cafe on site near play area and crazy golf.
Excellent maintained beautiful Park by the river! Memorial Park is beautiful and well maintained! Facilities include Children's Play Area, Tennis Court, Multi-purpose Sports Area, Bowling Green, Outdoor Gym, Cafe, pavilions! A dedicated cricket ground and football Pitches with Goal Posts are key attractions for sports fans and visitors alike! Mature Trees by the paths, Concrete Paths and path by the river are amazing to have a stroll with your children or jog yourself or with families/friends! Free Parking Facilities makes it very much accessible for all! Overall a brilliant park for jogging, walking, exercising, running, sitting, chatting, having snacks or coffee in the midst of the nature!
What a lovely park, very clean & well cared for, with a big playground, tennis courts & mini golf. Nice big open areas to walk or for kids to play, & dog friendly
