Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway

About

A delightful journey through the stunning Welsh countryside.

Story

Welcome to the Official Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway facebook page!

Opened in 1903 to link the market town of Welshpool to the rural community of Llanfair Caereinion, this 2 foot 6 inch narrow gauge steam railway now provides a tourist service for all the family and a welcome change from the rush of every day life.

Built as a Light Railway to avoid some of the costs of railway construction, the narrow gauge allows for tight curves and steep gradients, enabling the line to follow the contours of the countryside. All of our trains are steam hauled, either by one of our unique original locomotives or one from abroad. The carriages too are special; those in regular use being from Hungary and Austria with access to the enclosed seating area via an open balcony - a great way to watch the world go by.

We try and have at least two trips on this railway every year: the scenery is gorgeous whatever the weather (especially on the left side travelling from Welshpool to Llanfair). Staffed almost completely by friendly volunteers. A new annual treat is for the Welsh Tea Train (we've been twice now): fab tea one way, and a relaxing ride the other in the white leather seats of the first class Sierra Leone carriage! One is able to travel up and down all day for the same fare, but we've not yet treated ourselves. Always a really enjoyable and relaxing time.

A most picturesque trip through wonderful country side. Wild life abounds. And at the end of your trip visit the tea room for a welcome cuppa.

First time on here , weather was low fog with rain on off however it was a excellent train ride with beautiful scenery .The train is well kept with good clean carriages , you can stand on the balconies of the carriages front and rear this is great for taking pictures and videos . There are tea rooms with indoor and outdoor seating area at both ends of the stations with food and drinks . Drinks are allowed to be taken on the trains , also a gift shop . There are toilet restrooms on the platforms . All staff are very friendly They all give an excellent service . The Train ticket prices are good value , The car park at the stations are free . Will definitely be coming here again . I certainly recommend anyone to visit here .

Took 1,3 and 7 year old grandchildren for trip. They loved it. Exciting seeing engine change ends at half way mark before returning. Also enjoyed buying a treat from shop and having a drink and snack in cafe which is reasonably priced.

This lovely steam railway runs from just outside Welshpool up a steep hill, before running along the valley to Llanfair. The scenery is spectacular as is the atmosphere in the antique coaches and around the locos. Much of the rolling stock is not just old and narrow gauge but also foreign so you really will see something you have seen before. The stations are well maintained and staffed with friendly staff and volunteers who clearly live what they do. We also purchased a guide book which had a host of information about the history of the line, it's locos and it's rolling stock. Lived our visit, will call in again.
