We stayed a night here and absolutely loved it. It’s really quite remote so it’s really peaceful and the location is absolutely stunning. The pub is really cosy and the staff were all super friendly. The food is pub grub but good pub grub, definitely made for active outdoors people! Our room was very comfortable and we both slept very well. We’re already planning to go back!
This pub is in one of the most amazing locations of any pub I have been to. Just past the most amazing Lake, “Wast Water” in the middle of the lakes. We may not have chosen the best day to go there as it was very cold and the roads to it from where we were, were a little icy to say the least. So a journey that should have taken us about 1.5 hours took 4, but mostly because we were rescuing others. I mention the above as it does have a bearing on the food we had. When you drive or walk up the valley towards the Inn from down below you are greeted by some of the most amazing views in the lakes. As seen in my photos. The pub itself, sorry Inn is nestled in the middle of the valley floor just past the lake and has a great little shop next to it, which unfortunately was closed by the time we got there. The internals of the pub are really unique looking and you really get a sense of how long it’s been there, nice and warm and cozy considering it’s -1 outside. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and they had a great selection of unique beers. We ordered the roast dinner, which was a choice of Beef, Turkey or Gammon, not your usual but I was able to have all three which I was happy about. The meat was a little dry, but like I said we got there late so they would have struggled to keep it moist, we got there around 3.30pm. The potatoes were a little hard to but the gravy was incredible. There were some great elements to the meal, like the stuffing and the carrots I don’t want you to think it was bad, it wasn’t, it was tasty and just what we needed. The reason I say all this is it may not be the sort of place you go for it’s amazing food, but you should go there because of its incredible location and it’s complete uniqueness, you will not be disappointed, and the fact you can get a filling meal which I ate every part of is a complete bonus. Oh and the cauliflower cheese was banging!! One of the best I’ve had in a long time.
I am heading back here. It's a creaky old place full of character. Excellent service and the pub food for supper and the breakfast were both amazing. I was with friends but I might return alone in order to climb Scafell Pike, and it seems like a great place to make new friends. Walkability: If walkability means walk in so many directions and have beautiful hikes on the fells and moors, this is walkability supremo. You can get the little tourist train to Dalegarth near Boot and walk 10 kilometers to the Inn. We walked from Eskdale Green to get there and returned via Boot. So lovely.
Slightly confusing signage, but warm welcome from a bar person who was obviously slightly harassed due to staff shortages. Such a wonderful pub with bags of history and the Japanese larger was a great fine and very refreshing
I love this place, right in the middle of the biggest Wainwrights so you didn't waste a minute of your day traveling. How the owner manages to produce the huge breakfast and provide a room for such a low charge I don't know. The historical photographs and memorabilia produce a unique atmosphere. One thing that the owners might like to consider is how to share information about the local way of life and the geology of the area with customers to capitalise on their unique location. I didn't want to leave and can't wait to come back especially now that I have found fun and interesting routes up and down Scafell Pike. Thank you for a memorable stay. Rooms: The room was just right, warm, comfortable and with an amazing view. The shower was good and the mattress perfect for me, I slept like a log. Walkability: We loved that there were such great walks on the doorstep. It doesn't get any more in the heart of the big fells than this. Food & drinks: Great choice of local beers, well kept and served by friendly and chatty bar staff who had a sense of humour
I would definitely recommend this place! I got lost climbing down from Scafell pike and my phone died which then took me to a wrong direction and it was getting dark and late, then luckily I managed to find this place and the staff were so polite and friendly they managed to book me a room for a reasonable price, beds were lovely and the breakfast was amazing!
Great pub with quality food and decent portions. Friendly staff. The bartender Sam is a credit to the pub our lad slipped on the way there and Sam gave us everything we needed to get him cleaned up and was very helpful Rooms: 5/5
Lovely old pub, great pint of Guinness after a nice walk. Log fire a treat on cold and wet afternoon. One of only two places to get a phone signal for miles, so well worth a visit.Rooms: 5/5
We had soup which looked like vomit, and tasted disgusting. Couple the other side of us had left most of their food. Heighest mountain, deepest lake, smallest church and worst food in England!Service: 2/5
