i cant describe how much the view and the place is beautiful and how much you feel comfortable and peace. start from the stone heaven harbor and keep going with the coastal trail to the uphill you will find the war memorial and if you continue walk using the same trial you will reach to Dunnotar Castle. if you are in stone heaven you have to visit the memorial war.
Located just off the Dunnottar Castle trail, this memorial dominates the skyline and cliffs. Designed to look like a ruin, it definitely evokes a somber mood. Views from the memorial are spectacular.
This memorial is a must visit if you are in Stonehaven. It was build to commemorate the lives lost during the World Wars. It is located on top of the hill overlooking Stonehaven harbour and Dunnotar Castle. This memorial was built with Roman architectural design and was built in 1922 and officiated in 1923. There is a beautiful costal trail from the harbour up to the memorial. Alternatively, you can drive, 6 minutes away from the harbour, with limited roadside parking available. However, one must still walk a short distance up the hill to the memorial. From here, you can also continue on the costal trail which would lead to Dunnotar Castle, about twenty minutes away.
I've lived in Aberdeen for almost 14 years and now in Newtonhill for almost 3. I've visited Dunnoter Castle so many times but never walked up to the War Memorial. I went for the first time and absolutely loved this place. I guess its a mile and a half walk from the parking. Its advisable to wear warm and waterproof clothes as the weather can be quite unforgiving. The wind was also very cold and strong that day. The view is just spectacular. The cliffs, the sea the clouds all add up to the beauty of the location. The memorial is on a big hill which overlooks Stonehaven add surrounding areas. On a clear day it can be seen from Stonehaven harbour. When you arrive at the monument, you see the the names of the battalions, soldiers and officers on the tribute stone who laid their lives in the First world war. To my surprise when I read about it, around 26% Scots never came back home. Its serves as a reminder to all of us, about the people who bled and never made it back so we could enjoy our today while we sit on one of the weathered resting benches around the memorial soaking the beautiful surroundings. The artitecture of the monument is octagon and reminds of a temple. It also has the names of the area engraved where the soldiers fought. If you visiting Dunnoter Castle do visit this place. I bet one would truly love the place and its history.
We stopped by the War Memorial on the coastal walk from Stonehaven to Dunnottar Castle. It's a lovely position for a memorial with views panoramic views from the fields to the water.
A lovely monument to those that sacrificed during the war. You can walk from the nearby castle or there is a very small car park a couple of minutes walk from it.
Need some walk from castle to there, but worth to go!! Highly recommended!!
Very poignant place to visit and see at least once. There are benches to rest on as you make your way up and at the top also with some stunning views overlooking the town, sea and castle. The path itself is accessible if you have impaired mobility.
Impressive memorial, built in the 1920s and designed to look like a Greek ruin, the memorial has names of the larger battles of the first world war around the top. The views from next to the memorial are impressive, similarly you can see the memorial from all around. A fitting tribute to those lost in the first world war.
Beautiful serene place to spend a little time appreciating lives lost to save others. The view is spectacular.
