this castle is amazing!! there was a lot more to see than I expected. the views looking out to sea are incredible! there's a lot of steps up and down, so it's definitely not accessible at all, but if you can do the stairs I'd definitely recommend you visit!Wait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
Beautiful location that is dog friendly on short leads. It's a good 10 min walk from the car park to the castle down some steps, . I'm not overly fit and managed it. Just go at your own pace and plenty of opportunity to sit and move out of people's ways, and well worth it. Lovely views from the keep, and very well laid out with just enough information to learn. Staff very friendly and helpful.
Dunnottar Castle in Stonehaven is quite possibly one of my favourite castles in Scotland. I’ve made the trip several times from Newport as it is not very far from our family home. It takes a bit of walking to get from the car park to the castle and also to walk around the outside and inside of the castle. I cannot stress this enough. The views are stunning. Since I’ve toured inside the castle before, I like walking up to the castle and exploring the grounds. You simply can not take a bad picture at this castle with the views of the North Sea, the dramatic cliffs and the overall topography. The flora, fauna, waterfalls and soaring and perching birds makes this castle a photographer’s dream. Tourists usually explore the West side of Scotland and then miss the stunning, impressive and breathtaking cliffs of the Aberdeenshire Coastal Trails. If you’re looking for unforgettable and romantic castles that you will never, ever forget, this is the castle for you!
What an amazing piece of Scottish history...outstanding. Great to finally get into it and see around the grounds. Also great to see 8t really busy with tourists. £9.50 for adults and £4.50 for kids aged 5-15... Well worth the money...the views are pretty spectacular also.
Incredible views, really interesting half derelict castle, well worth the walk down and up a load of stairs. We happened to go as part of the Visit Scotland initiative so it was only £3.50 each student half price - well worth it. Go on a good weather day, or wear appropriate clothing because it is very exposed with no shelter.
It's a really beautiful castle with gorgeous and stunning natural beauty. It was the experience of heaven. One should visit this place once in a lifetime. You need to take your car to visit this place as it's remotely located. Also, it's better to visit it in summer.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
We did a day trip to Stonehaven and walked the coastal route to the Castle. Admission to the castle is well priced with friendly staff. The Castle is well maintained with phenomenonal views. We spent hours looking round all of it. There's also bathrooms at the castle. The only thing to be aware of is the steps to the castle, if someone struggles with their mobility it may not be the trip for them. Parking: We did the walk from Stonehaven so not sure about parking cost but the cafe is in the car park with excellent food. Lots of spaces for parking and toilets there too.
Enjoyed my time here. Though this was Castle Ruins, the building is intact to the extent that it gives you a sense of what it was back in the day. There are pictures to help with visualization, signs to serve as guides and the grounds are very well maintained. Particularly, I’d say that the views are the best thing about this historical building. Very picturesque. You can also access the Waterfront/beach from the castle. Will recommend.
Having grown up in the area then moved away It has been over 30 years since I last visited the castle. We have a flat in Stonehaven so walked from the old town along the coastal route. You need to be fit if taking that route and not scared off high cliff edges but a highly recommended walk. Entry price was reasonable and there are toilets within the castle grounds. Well worth a look if you are in the area. The only downside is that the stairs both down to and then back up to get into the castle require a able bodied person to manage it.
Amazing view of the castle sitting on top surrounded by the North Sea. We’ve been touring UK for three months now and this is our favorite medieval ruins so far. It’s a 2-hr train ride from Edinburgh Waverley station to Stonehaven and a short taxi ride, 2 miles, to the castle. If you like walking, you can walk to the castle from Oldtown Stonehaven. There’s an easy trail along the coastline with breathtaking view. Round trip should be less than 3 miles. It has a small food truck serving coffee, snacks and light food. Layer up as it can get windy, cold and rainy. It has over 200 steps from parking lot to the castle entrance and many more steps within the castle grounds. Do not recommend strollers or anyone with mobility issues. There’s a wonderful trail on top of the cliff overlooking North Sea. Wear waterproof shoes and enjoy hiking.
