Despite being with this surgery for 20 years, I am very disappointed with the apparent need to put money before patients and the deterioration in basic standards of communication from some staff. I have discovered that certain medications (one in particular,) are rigidly refused apparently due to costs. This before even attempting to ascertain whether or not the medication can be effective. In addition, there appears to be a tendency to prescribe cheaper/standard antibiotics rather than perhaps considering those that are more expensive but possibly stronger. The decision to change surgeries has come about due to my recent experiences regarding the inability for reception/administration staff to ensure that requested phone consultations take place - not one member of staff had the courtesy to either apologise or advise that the requested call would not be taking place. This was despite assurances that I would not be overlooked when I called back to report that I had not been contacted. There is a policy that dictates GP's do not phone mobile telephone numbers but it is not always acceptable to have to take time off work to go home and wait for a telephone consultation as I did - particularly when the call was requested following contact initiated by a GP. I expect that this short sighted decision could well come from a commissioning level, putting pennies before patients, but I also feel a more conscientious attitude should be promoted within the surgery administration staff. It is a real shame that the services provided by this surgery have declined and whilst I can appreciate that every service needs to be aware of budgets, I am also aware that the other local surgery appears to practise the duty of care that patients and their families are entitled to.
