I visited the V&A with friends three weeks ago specifically to see the Kimono exhibition, which is excellent. I decided then to come back with my hubby. He wasn't interested in the Kimono exhibition, which you have to pay to see, but did enjoy the two free galleries. One on the history and social relevance of photography. The other on Scottish design. Both are excellent. The Dundee V&A building itself is a huge space and an impressive design, well worth the visit. I can also recommend the cafe.
It's free. How can you beat that? Amazing building. I attended while the kimono exhibit was on, that's a paid thing and enjoyed it alot. Had an ancient tea room moved into the building for preservation as well.
Amazing architecture, and a lovely atmosphere - not the fusty museums of old but a contemporary exhibition space, filled with people of all ages, even on a Monday. I absolutely loved the Kimono exhibition and appreciated the mix of displays, especially the room with the mirrored ceiling that repeated the graphics of the kimonos upwards. Interesting to see kimono culture in context with the other avenues it has inspired and also the fetishism of the culture. The space itself has a very communal feel, with people working at seats in the downstairs seating area and kids interacting with displays upstairs. The food was good, but the information about what is available should be right at the beginning, rather than only visible by the time you reach someone taking your order. Also the options available could be simplified. Restrooms are amazing, and the lockers also a great idea. Gift shop had a good selection of interesting things, good for gift buying. I also loved the Donna Wilson creature wall!
First visit. Really enjoyed the photography exhibition. The Scottish one was interesting but feel the Charles Rennie Mcintosh tea room could have had more explaining its history and/or maybe a wee display tearoom could have been set up to give a better idea of how the space was used. It is an interesting building but feel it has a minimalist feel where there is a lot of wasted space.i enjoyed the visit but wouldn’t rush back.
Loved the gallery. Amazing building and grounds. Staff fantastic. The interactive exhibitions were fabulous.nShame the cafe has such a huge selection of cakes but ONLY flapjack that's Plant based. It's 2034. Catch up.
