Umu

About

Umu, London’s first Kyoto kaiseki restaurant, was
opened in September 2004 by MARC Ltd (Marlon Abela
Restaurant Corporation).

MARC also owns Cassis Bistro in Knightsbridge and The Greenhouse and Morton’s Club, both in Mayfair.

Story

Nestled on Bruton Place, serving Michelin-starred Japanese cuisine, Umu prides itself on the provenance and integrity of ingredients, which are used to create innovative Kyoto influenced dishes. Executive Chef Yoshinori Ishii is involved in every aspect of the restaurant from flower arranging, to making the ceramic tableware. He maintains regular contact with Cornish and Scottish fishermen to whom he has taught the humane Japanese method 'ike jime' of fish preparation to preserve the quality of the fish. Each day Umu flies in fresh produce from Japan to ensure Yoshinori’s exacting standards.

Yoshinori Ishii

Yoshinori Ishii brings over twenty years of cooking experience to the elegant dishes for which Umu is famed. As well as being a highly accomplished chef, he is also a skilled fisherman, potter, and calligrapher. Ishii has a rare eye for artful display as well as flavour, incorporating his expertise as not only a chef but also a skilled artist into each dish.

Ishii trained for nine years at the three Michelin-starred restaurant Kyoto Kitcho in Japan. Although he was sous chef, he also took responsibility for cultivating traditional Japanese vegetables and preserving and arranging all the cultural assets owned by the restaurant- from flower arranging to tableware. Following his time at Kyoto Kitcho, Ishii then became Head Chef at the Japanese Embassy for the United Nations in Geneva and New York. He then worked as Omakase Chef at Morimoto restaurant, also in New York. During his time there he received the prestigious ‘Rising Star Chef’ award and was a finalist for the Vilcek prize for culinary arts.

Testimonials:

“Near fanatical about the quality and freshness of its fish, Umu is the thinking man’s Japanese. The sommelier looks after one of the largest sake lists in the world while a new chef, now six months in the job, continues to run the show beautifully.”
Jeremy Wayne, Tatler Restaurant Guide 2011

“It’s impossible to dispute or underestimate the attention to detail and imagination packed into each of Umu’s magical, Kyoto-style dishes.”
Square Meal Guide 2011

“The mere fact that there are over 160 different labels of sake available tells you this is no ordinary Japanese restaurant.”
London Michelin Guide 2009

Our dinner at the restaurant was amazing! We opted for the set menu and had champagne paired with it. The food was delicious and beautifully presented, with a great variety of flavors and textures.Food: 5/5
Food at Umu was just top notch, and we were worried that it would be one of those Michelin snobbish place, but we were pleasantly surprised with the kind service considering we weren't dressed up like the other guests we were out walking whole day in London. We didn't order tasting menu because we were so full, so we plucked some stuff from the menu card. I had the white miso, a couple of sushi and veggie tempura and they were so delicious.
Short walk from Oxford Circus tube stop I’m located in a backstreet of Mayfair. Brother modern minimalistic design with Wood based decor with chefs counter. Set at the chefs counter with little no acknowledgement of the chefs on seating and no interaction between the chef throughout the time sat at the table for the full meal, which is a real shame, compared to other chef table counter experience. Ordered the Bento box with king prawn tempura which was average and poor value for money. The starter salad prior to the bento box was light, small and average. The bento box itself was a combination of four bowls with various veg tempura and the two prawn tempura which was unfortunately cold and limp, vegetable in sauce, some fresh fish with vegetables and a dish of pickled vegetable. This was accompanied with the soy dip with the red soup and a small pickled vegetable. The red soup was excellent as super intense. The Tempura vegetables and the two king prawns was cold and therefore not crispy and the various other four bowls of seafood and vegetables were all very average. The dessert of green tea, ice cream was very nice with the combination of a few fruits. The Petit four of the green tea Madeline at the end was also very nice. The Plum wine spritz was also good. Service was average Found the whole experience rather stiff, unfriendly and lacked warmth to the dining experience. The food portions are small, you do walk away, being still slightly peckish, which may be good for a light lunch or if you are planning to go out for dinner.
Outstanding Japanese restaurant in London, cozy and sophisticated ambience to enjoy every single second of the meal. I had probably the best woodcock that I ever eaten.Food: 5/5
My go to when im taking clients or friends out for dinner. Uncomplicated menu with really fresh ingredients. Friendly team and a sommelier who knows his stuff. Interior is cozy. Ive tried so many japanese restaurants in london over the years and this one’s the best, hands down. Keep it up!Food: 5/5
Beautiful food. Got better as time went on well worthy of of its 1 Michelin star Food: 5/5
What a lovely restaurant. Very pleasant and very good service. We had a special event to celebrate and I wanted to add a bit of a ritual to it and the staff needed no prompting and were happy to accommodate. They even made a special, complimentary desert for us. The food is exquisite, maybe a little expensive, but devine. My only gripe was that they only have one menu. An establishment of such calibre and clients should have two. One with the prices and one without. I didn't want my wife to be choosing or limiting herself due to the price. If she'd had a menu without the prices she would have been more relaxed and experimental. We SHALL be back.
Umu is one of the best Japanese restaurant in London. The quality of the fish is unmatched anywhere in the city. We opted to not do the tasting menu and order off the menu and everything was amazing. The service here could be improved. I found the service to be a bit brusque.
The food was okay and not worth the money in my opinion I am from Japan btw. You can certainly find better Japanese food for more reasonable price in London or Tokyo. The service was also very mediocre.... They made a mistake on my dessert, but they weren't so apologetic. I felt like they wanted me to take the wrong dessert... In the end I was coughing like crazy for a while for some reason, but nobody offered me water until one of the sushi chefs noticed much later. Overall very disappointing. I don't think I will go again, unfortunately.
Very bad. Cannot believe this is a Michelin starred restaurant. Bad taste and bad quality with unmatched price.Food: 1/5
