We arrived as the first guests but we were pushed to a table upstairs. When asked if we could have a table downstairs it was declined. When we were leaving tables downstairs were still empty. It was a shame as all these years we were seated always downstairs and had an amazing time. This time the food was good, overpriced though and the ambience wasn’t the same. The restaurant lost its edge for us.
Friend and I asked for afternoon tea even though not booked and even though it was very short notice they managed to do one for us. We had to wait for about an hour so we went looking around shops and didn't mind as they were nice enough to let us have afternoon tea and when we went back we had a lovely table and a very tasty afternoon tea and girls was very helpful and polite and left you in peace but on hand if u needed anything. Lovely little gem staff friendly food great.
Came here for the gin evening held on Fridays. Very popular, suggest booking a table as there's not much space at the bar. Several pages of gins to pick from, all served with selected tonics, fruits or spices. Very attentive staff and cosy atmosphere. Nice small plates of food on offer, cheese board was great. Had a bit of a wait for our table but could still have our gins at the bar. Will definitely be back
One of the best restaurant's I've eaten at and the only one who uses your Christian name to identify the guests, very clever, a nice personalisation. The staff are very well turned out very engaging, we had a fantastic evening. The food was fantastic, not big portions but just wonderful, probably the best I've eaten in some years Price - exceptional value a nice surprise. THANK YOU. GRAHAM TAPP
Have been here many times over the years and it's still as good as ever. Good wine selection with plenty of English wine options, great cheese board for dessert. Very friendly and attentive staff.
Food was good, but for the price I was paying ~£30 a head for a main and dessert, it wasn't worth it. I had a duck main: it was chewy and bland. Atmosphere is lovely, and feels like it should be a great restaurant, but sadly the food is a let down.
Fantastic food every time I come here. Cute setting, can feel a little cramped at times but the building is hundreds of years old so that makes sense. Staff have always been very friendly
I visit this wonderful Restaurant 2 or 3 times a year the food is wonderful the staff are very friendly Nothing is too much trouble . If you do not pay them a visit you are missing out on a wonderful Treat I Visited Again only yesterday for Christmas Lunch, it was very busy due to the Dickens Christmas festival. Always love this place. Great locally sourced food, good selection of drinks, must book! Service is relaxed. Expect 3 courses to take a couple of hours. Visited many times.
My wife and I have, over the years, been to hundreds of restaurants literally all over the world and in doing so have come to acquire an understanding for cuisine, dining atmosphere, service and the importance of that delicate balance between flavours and textures. Topes has catapulted to our top three in a single visit, with an excellent, friendly, on-hand and non-invasive customer service. The food is colourful, cooked wondefully, beautifully presented at the perfect temperature and is portioned just right. That all important and profusely delicate balance required between texture and flavour is perfectly achieved with the well varied local produce and the price doesn't break the bank; in fact we found it to be modest considering the quality of the dining experience!!! The open fire and subtle seasonal touches themed the restaurant beautifully and have served to provide us with a fantastic experience!!! Thankyou everyone at Topes. We'll be back. To the haters, of which I'm sure there can only be few, don't rate a restaurant until you understand good food and fine dining
