Great pub, seeped in history , originally 2 farm labourers cottages dating back to 1640. Changed to a coaching Inn in the 1800s with the later addition of a wonderful dining area. The interior is a knockout with ancient beams everywhere. Decent selection of beers and the service was attentive and prompt. Damien, the manager was a mine if information and we will return to sample the food which looked tasty. The toilets were spacious and spotless so all good.
Stopped here for late lunch. We shared a sqid starter. Delicious and tender. And a very tasty chicken and ham hock pie for main. Very generous portion. Loved the pastry too. Tina was very welcoming and very attentive.
We had a very warm welcome from Damian and his team of wonderful people. The food was superb and the service was exceptional. I highly recommend going to this lovely relaxing pub restaurant for one of the best experiences you could have with dining out. Date of visit: 28th April 2022
Had a roast today and the food was awful. The service was okay but the food was just so bad. We have been so many times before and it has been fantastic but today it was not good. My partner had 2 carrots on his plate and they were black. Mine was all burnt! The potatoes were chewy and stale. The meat was minimal. And the Yorkshire was burnt. The cabbage was hardly cooked. So disappointed.
When we were living in Colchester, we used to  to the Yew tree often and liked the delicious pub food and the atmosphere.  That is why we tried the same place in our recent  visit to the colchester this time too. However, it was a disappointment. Our orders arrived an hour later, after having to enquire after them. Mash was cold, gravy was too runny. Manager apologised and offered us desert on the house. It was a good gesture however, it did not fix the real problem of having our main courses being cold and not as good as before. I may think twice to go there again...
Had not been to the Yew Tree for a few years when we found it not very clean and terrible service. What difference. Nice well lit area, good menu and quick service. My wife and I had the steak pie and mash which was lovely. My daughter had a mixed grill which was huge and was well presented. Nice desserts to finish off. Friendly and efficient waitresses Grace and Sophie. Will definitely be back.
Sadly over our last two visits to yew tree had 2 very bad experiences. First visit was almost 4 hours between being seated and leaving. Very long waiting times and when food did come out it was cold. This was start of Nov. We decided to give it another try today. We have a 7 year old with egg allergies who ordered steak well done with mash and beans. Steak came out completely burnt. When we flagged this to the waitress she suggested this is how a well-done steak but offered to redo. Next steak came out and it was red in middle and they gave salad with dressing no idea why as this will have eggs and could be fatal to him. We sent the steak back showing it was red and highlighted the allergies. Next time steak came out it was still red. Again we had to send it back again it came back red and again we had to send it back how hard is it to cook steak to well-done standard. Obviously this ruined our experience and I'm not sure I will risk going back again a shame before it used to be a lovely place Marc
I had lunch at the Yew Tree today, with a group of friends, from the University of the Third Age, look them up...the best group of people, the food was so pleasing to the eye....and so delicious. I had the king prawn starter, followed by ice cream, choices were great, homemade cookie biscuit AND a sweet little jug of salted caramel sauce....never seen that anywhere before. I’m an ice cream addict!! The service was the best, staff were very welcoming and so nice, I intend taking family back there. Many thanks Maureen
Pub is nice and staff attentive. Food is hit and miss and tonight we wasted a lot of money on food that was over cooked and dry like it had been sitting out for a long time, with no sauce on one of the mains and when I asked was told there was none left. No butter on new potatoes and without sauce was inedible. I left most of mine and wasted over £18. It was early on a Saturday night and wasn’t even busy. For the price we would have expected better quality cooking.
We visited last Friday lunchtime for a family meal 3 adults, 5 children. The children's food came out first. Children's cheese burger looked extremely unappetising but we'd waited a long time so didn't send it back, he just ate some of the side dishes we'd ordered. When the 3 adult mains fish and chips arrived, they were all very overcooked and dry. I complained to the waiter who told me that they had all been served like that and other diners said it was delicious. We had seen another table's fish earlier and it didn't look overcooked so this seemed dishonest. He said he would get the kitchen to replace it but came back a while later to say they ran out of fish so we could choose something else. We waited around 20 minutes for someone to come back to take our orders, by which time the children had finished eating and were becoming extremely restless. We chose to settle the bill and pick up fish and chips on the way home- a fraction of the cost and edible. We were not charged for our mains but received no real apology or acknowledgement from the restaurant for the inconvenience. They made us feel like they didn't really care at all.
