Servicing the Premier Inn it is adjacent to, the Balkerne is a busy pub with lots of workers using the place. The menu reflects the changing times for example you now have to pay 49p for a naan bread where it used to be included in the meal. The menu and beer/lager options are all decent and the staff are really excellent.
Firstly, the wings are incredible. Proper home made mother's here. Get them with the sauce on the side... You know what? I was going to knock a star off because of the size of my gammon, but thinking about it, I think they got it just right. It looked tiny on my plate, but it really was just enough. Fair play, portion guys! Marked down for a long wait for the coffee machine at breakfast, plus that holiday bloody toaster.
Evening meal was OK I did find it a bit cold in the restaurant as the blowers was directly over me but was unable to move seats as it was a little busy... Breakfast in the morning again little busy not enough staff on in relation to how many people came for Breakfast I was taken to my seat I was told someone will come and take my order I had some rice Krispy's while I waited again I was acknowledged but after 45 mins of waiting and still no Breakfast I had to leave to go to work there was no structure no order the staff that was on was buzzing around looking busy but they didn't cope very well the toaster wasn't working there was no sugar available except brown and that's no good on your krispys. Overall the location of the hotel was good for me for getting to work if I had to visit the area again I will give the Balkerne Gate Table Table another try and put my bad 2 days down to lack of experience by staff and some situations can't be helped. Parking: Parking is free small walk from carpark to Hotel Wheelchair accessibility: Lots of spaces for wheelchair accessible parking hotel
The staff are polite and friendly. The food menu is abit limited but I do understand as other restaurants are still serving a limit menu's too. The food is ok nothing to really shout about but It does gets upgraded to a 4* as £9.50 for unlimited breakfast and kids eat free isn't bad value.
There's a lot of variation between Table Tables in my experience, but Balkerne Gate is consistently one of the best. Decent pub grub nicely presented, friendly courteous staff, and a convivial atmosphere. You can't expect fine dining at this budget, but what they do here, they do well.Food: 5/5
Fantastic value for money. We had the continental breakfast which had lots of fresh items and for £2 more you can include full English. Staff are lovely and friendly and the restaurant is really clean. We'll be back soon!
Waitress was very nice polite and welcoming. Unfortunately we waited over an hour for our meals 4 people. At least 2 meals had clearly been kept warm for a significant amount of time after being plated as the salad had been cooked -it was hot not just warm; actually hot, browned and sitting in a puddle of water. This would probably explain why the meat was quite rubbery. I was assured by the people we were with that the dessert was nice.
This is a lovely place to have a catch up with someone and this is convenient to be right next to the A12. As it makes up roughly a mid-way point from each others homes. The food was lovely and service was good, very quick to get the food in and got everything correct, include asking for sauces. Thank you for your service Parking: Parking spaces are small and can be a pain to get around. I have a Ford fiesta and felt like my car was a BMW
Terrific service from a friendly crowd and a reasonably priced "all you can eat" style breakfast. The let down though was the food itself. Vegetarian bacon was indigestible, the scrambled egg was dry left out too long, possibly under a lamp and fried eggs were also hard and dry. They could do with an extra coffee machine as the queues for it were quite long. Not a bad experience, but could easily be improved on. Vegetarian options: A fair selection of vegetarian options Parking: Parking is free, no messing around with machines or having to register anything either
As a family we love this restaurant. Came today, they were very busy which is fair enough, however they had no roast dinners left. My other half had the curry which was very watery. My daughter was meant to have choc and a wafer with her ice cream but didn't and there was quite a long wait to get our food. Overall an ok experience and we will return but maybe some things that need to be addressed. Waiter very friendly however
