The Wood Norton Hotel, Evesham, Worcestershire - a newly converted 50 bedroom hotel and conference centre

Story

Wood Norton Hall is an impressive Grade II listed Victorian building in a countryside setting on the outskirts of the riverside town of Evesham, in the shadows of the Malvern Hills and on the edge of the Cotswolds.
It is currently being transformed into a superb quality 49-bedroom bespoke hotel and centre for conferences, weddings and leisurely weekends.
The recent history of Wood Norton began in 1872, when the exiled French Duc d'Aumale purchased the estate as a hunting lodge.
By 1897, the estate had passed to his great nephew, the Duc D’Orleans, who saw Wood Norton as the ideal location to base the Bourbon-Orleans family. The hunting lodge was then converted into the Hall that stands today.
Wood Norton played host to many noble guests from around the world, culminating in the wedding of the Princess Louise of Orleans (Grandmother of the present King Juan Carlos of Spain) and Prince Charles of Bourbon in 1907. The Duc had a wooden chapel erected specifically for the ceremony, however, amidst all of the excitement the license for the chapel was forgotten so the actual ceremony took place in Evesham!
Sold by the family in 1911, the estate then had a sucesssion of owners until acquired by the BBC in 1939. Established as an emergency broadcasting base, Wood Norton had become the largest broadcasting centre in Europe by the beginning of 1940 with an average output of 1,300 programmes a week.
It was the home of the BBC’s monitoring service from 1939 until 1943, when monitoring moved to Caversham Park. The move was made to release space at Wood Norton so that it could become the BBC’s main broadcasting centre, should London have to be evacuated. A major fire during the war destroyed the Halls’ upper storeys.
After the war, Wood Norton became the home of the BBC Engineering Training department. During the Cold War, it was designated as the broadcasting centre in the event of a nuclear attack.
Wood Norton was used for some of the filming of the Doctor Who serial Spearhead from Space and it was later used for all of the location filming for another Doctor Who series Robot.
Wood Norton enjoyed a multi-million pound refurbishment by the BBC in 1995 and opened as a luxury 45 bedroom Hotel and Conference Centre. It was subsequently sold by the BBC in 2001 and has been in private ownership since this time.
Wood Norton Hall Hotel is scheduled to re-open in Spring 2012.

Wonderful building, lovely friendly and efficient staff. Disappointed Valentine's Day though. Afternoon tea, delicious but served in a cold room. No heating on at 2pm. Also no celebration of the day. No balloons, flowers anywhere. A bit sad when there where about eight couples there specially for the day.

Lovely place with an interesting history. Superb view from our bedroom window. Everything was so laid back. Excellent food and good ale.

Concerns over the attentiveness of the bar staff at the venue. Ion going into the gardens the Olive tree tins were littered with Peroni bottles and glasses...meanwhile bar staff were stood chatting. Certainly hope this level of service and standards improves.

A lovely, very well presented hotel. I was a wedding guest on a Saturday and was impressed with the selection of ales and food on offer. The grounds are perfect and in a very quiet area - quite the hidden gem.

Went for a wedding. Lovely venue with a quaint old world feel in beautiful gardens. The main house looks stunning from the outside with a big open drive at the entrance that has a small pond and fountain. Inside there are several rooms with lovely ornate wood carved walls and ceilings. A large lawn at the back that has a giant tree with a swing, plenty of outdoor seating to watch the guests playing outdoor lawn games. A fantastic view from the lawn, which is perfect for a few photos. For the wedding, there is a purpose built 'orangery' that caters for wedding receptions. A large open hall with a bar, toilets and overlooks the main hotel venue. Car parking is a small drive up a hill behind the venue and then steps and a slope down to the entrance. Between the main venue and the Orangery is a winding path, so even though it would be classed as disabled access friendly it was really hard work going up and down pushing a wheelchair. I was concerned going down in case I let go of the chair! There are lifts inside to get to the rooms if required. A lovely venue with friendly staff.
