Visited for the first time, to find a welcoming club-like atmosphere awaiting and a suitably cosy place to listen to some interesting and enjoyable live jazz. The bar holds both familiar names and local brews that were new to me, but worth trying out! The surrounding area boasts a huge variety of eating establishments too, with an excellent choice of cultural/ethnic sources. Certainly anticipate visiting again, even though it is located on the opposite side of London.
Intimate venue tucked away just off Kingsland Road. Superb jazz always! Intelligent, experimental, modern jazz that is both accessible and intricate. We have sat in cabaret and theatre style here before - prefer theatre.Atmosphere: 5/5
Can only speak for the downstairs area, but this place is a hidden gem. Friendly staff, good selection of drinks to choose from, cosy feel, and of course good music. The room was set up theatre style, and when more people arrived than there were seats available, the staff kindly went and fetched more seating to accommodate everyone easily. Only thing to note is that groups of people tend to hang outside playing music on speaker/walking their dogs/meeting up, so if you're easily distracted like me, then avoid sitting by the window! Or enjoy the people watching
Small jazz venue offering lovely jazz events / gig options. Would recommend it for casual jazz fans, or anyone looking for a smaller setting to enjoy jazz at. Their bar drinks option is good.Food: 4/5
What a truly amazing show we saw here, Tivon Pennicott quartet was incredible. The venue is very intimate and the acustic was great! We will be back
Excellent venue for more interesting jazz ie less of the easy-listening, cocktail bar-style jazz that you might find in some other venues, some of it of very high quality. There’s a very friendly, welcoming vibe. The venue is not large, I guess it will squeeze in c.100 with 60-70 or so seated. Seating is theatre style rather than sitting around tables. Arriving at or near door opening time will get you a seat. It also packs in a reasonably priced bar.
Beautiful music. We attended on the 14th Feb and heard the trio: Heidi Vogel – Voice James Kitchman – Guitar Bruno Heinen – Piano We have heard them on YouTube and Apple Music etc but this kind of music has to be listened to live to be fully appreciated. The venue has a reputation for hosting fantastic musicians and it didn’t disappoint. This club is more of a seated music venue rather than a bar though there is a small bar.
Great music, funny and chatty waiters at the bar, and nice crowd. Visit if you want to hear jazz in a local club.Service: 5/5
Fabulous jazz on Fri at Vortex Dalston with Alex Hitchcock sax, Alexandra Ridout tpt and Will Barrie pno! Superb new compositions and exquisite performances. Team at Vortex doing such a great job supporting the best in London - possibly the best venue in London!Service: 5/5
Nice club in North London. A bit cramped, but the acoustics were OK. Good local vibe in the area outside with good options for casual food and drink. The drinks in Vortex were reasonably priced, but not the best. Run by volunteers, who were all passionate about the place. The main downside is the poor connections by public transport. It makes an interesting counterpoint to Ronnie Scott's, the other main Jazz venue in London.
